The RDA doesn't represent the whole of humanity though. They might be done for good, the humans who come back to Pandora may use some of their assets but not be associated with them directly.

Jake says that the men on Pandora where ex-marines and given the size of the animals they have to fight they would have to be soldiers.
Animals don't shoot back (though Na'vi do). SecOps on Pandora don't engage in what would be considered modern (or 2154) wartime activities, nor are they "baton and gun" security guards. While sort of special forces experience may not be most useful, you'd surely want fairly trained, fairly competent personnel.

I don't think RD-701 was saying the Na'vi are "animals" (though given what Selfridge says about them in the movie, I am guessing that some humans think the Na'vi are little more than sub-human savages), I think RD-701 was saying that unlike the animals of Pandora, the Na'vi can and do shoot back, albeit with arrows and not guns, but getting hit with a six-foot long arrow tipped with a deadly neurotoxin that will kill you in less than a minute would certainly suck rocks to anyone on the receiving end.
Here's my Avatar fan fiction. Give it a read, if you're so inclined.

Also remember that the school house incident happened two years before the movie and all the soldiers were hired 6.5 years before the movie. Meaning that when they were hired the relations with the Na-vi were not as bad as they were at the time of the movie.

That is pretty much exactly what I meant to say.

Also, there is nothing wrong with being an animal- I am quite happy that taxonomically I fall into the kingdom Metazoa (Animals), because, after all, it's far better to be an animal than a fungus or plant.

The Na'vi would not be animals in the true sense of the term (since animals are strictly an Earth-based group), but would belong to the analogous Pandoran clade that includes other organisms (life-forms) such as the prolemuris, banshees, thanators and viperwolves, etc. Of course on Pandora the classifications are a bit different, as evidenced by 'plant animals' like the helicoradians, atokirina, etc.

But that doesn't make the Na'vi any less sapient or intelligent than humans of course.

    WARRRRRRRRRRRGHHH!!!

Though I think orks are just meant to be symbiotic with fungus. Not fungus themselves. The fluff changes so often though that it could be both.

Now theres an interesting thought. How would eywa react to a bunch of Orkz landing on pandora?
