You can see Cameron's engineer roots in the functionality of the weapons and the machines in this movie. Heck, you could see it from the begining of his directing career with Terminator. The guy knows how machines work without having to sacrifice logic for "coolness", like in other movies (namely ones directed by a guy who knows nothing about physics, Micheal Bay).
