The Activist Survival Guide book never explain how the machines work. How do they work to connect the human to the avatar?
I asked a similar question a few months ago. It's really a sort of pure sci-fi kinda thing. But here's a theory:
Avatar (species) - James Cameron's Avatar Wiki - Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana
Using Psionic Link technology, the human controller can remotely control the avatar body out in the wilds of Pandora. The controller receives all sensory input and provides all motor control to the body. Essentially, the Controller lives through the Avatar, and is completely unaware of his human body while linked. Each Avatar is genetically keyed to its respective human controller.Psionics is the study and/or practice of using the mind to induce paranormal phenomena. Examples of this include telepathy, telekinesis, and other workings of the outside world through the psyche. Psionic technology was used in the Avatar Program and to control AMP Suits.
Obviously it is fictional but I would say that the advanced technology somehow found a way to directly control the brain and induce a type of waking REM sleep. If you know what Lucid Dreaming is, that is very similar to this. Little is known about how lucid dreaming works other than you can litterally become aware during a dream and feel like you are 100% actually there (allthough it is hard to learn). Then perhaps they found a way to use this mysterious ability and direct the dreaming conciousness to another body.

~New, Epic Avatar sig under construction~
It'd be possible with extensive use of cybernetics. But there is no sign of this kinda tech......So who knows.
I have this weird idea of that given the technology there is a chip implaneted into teh avatar to help the driver use it. Of course I'm guessing.
That would be cybernetics. Of course it'd have to be a lot more then "just a chip" we'd be talking about major surgery for both the pilot and implanting the nescessary hardware and software to allow for the Driver to control the body.
Yeah in watching the movie again, I figure the link machine works more like a digital brain scan of sorts that then feeds it into the Avatar. As to how exactly, not sure, unless nanobots are already in use in the time frame the movie takes place in.
I still wonder how they manage the long distance transfer of data. Unless they build up a satellite system over there to transfer data (and put a receiving unit into the brain of the AVATAR), I think, all kind of "telekinesis" will not work if the "destination" is too far away....
I'm guessing that some form of quantum entanglement or something like that plays a very important part in the actual link between the human and the Avatar.
Here's my Avatar fan fiction. Give it a read, if you're so inclined.
Does anyone else think the "link' machines they lie down in resembles a tanning bed??? I just thought that was funny. Ummm, what was with all the standard neon lighting too? 150 years into the future and we still stuck with good old neon tube lights. Most of the movie was fabulous effects. Some pretty mundane and been around for long, long time.
I watched closely also when the AMP suits fired on the hammerhead rhinos. Not a single hit at point blank range. Also, Jake fired his weapon at that big black "cat", Not a scratch. But that scene where the Colonel knifed at the end is interesting. If a simple knife can penetrate it's hide, why wouldn't a high caliber rifle round?? Loved the bugs fliting about in the background. Lots of fun to look forward to in sequels!! Pandor deep forrests are just like earth in one respect both can be breathtakingly beautiful and dangerous as hell...
