    Default Hell's Gate's Detention

Does anyone else find it hard to believe that Hell's Gate's detention facility consists of a singel cell for about five people, yet this is the only place to detain people in a complex for about a thousand people. Or for that matter why a high risk area has no CCTV monitoring.

That's something I hope is answered in the prequel novel (the question about the "detention center" and its location, security measures therein, etc.) when it comes out at long last. How did Max manage to get away with using the card to get Norm, Grace, and Jake out of the detention cell? Was it his card or the guard's card? Did he get away with it or did Quaritch figure out who did the deed? If so, was Max punished in some way?

These are the kinds of questions related to the escape sequence shown in all three versions of the movie and with no definitive answers, that one scene is rich fodder for plenty of fanfics that attempt to answer these questions.

(I came up with a partial answer in my fanfic and there have been a few other fanfics that bring up or touch on the escape sequence and how Max and Trudy got away with it)
Here's my Avatar fan fiction. Give it a read, if you're so inclined.

Well, you have to keep in mind that Hell's Gate isn't a real city, it's basically just a small mining town. Think back to all the old westerns you've seen (Avatar IS a western after all ) Your typical western town has the local sheriff's office which has a couple of jail cells attached to it. It's primary function is to be a place where you can put guys who have had too much to drink at the saloon so they can sleep off their drunk. It's probably the same way at Hell's Gate. There aren't going to be any hardened criminals to deal with, but you can bet some of the workers get a little rowdy from time to time and have to be locked up over night until they sober up. It's not too surprising that security isn't that tight. On Pandora the danger is from the outside, not the inside--or so they thought

probably because they never expected a group would turn on the RDA. the situation is earth is dying, they desperately need the unobtanium to keep earth going. the priority on Pandora is to mine Unobtanium so they probably assumed that with such a serious task at hand, no one would dare turn on them. at worst they probably just expected a few people misbehaving, therefore no need for a serious prison
There are many dangers on Pandora, and one of the subtlest is that you may come to love it too much.

I agree with you, however I suspect that Hell's Gate would also have to deal with problems that wouldn't occure on Earth. One that comes into mind is two men fighting over the same women (in this case literaly) and/or any variation. In these situations putting both of them into the same cell isn't going to solve problems.

Though the simplist explanation for this is that there was a second cell to the left of them which wasn't in frame; containing an unconscious engineer drunk on moonshined industrial spirit

    Yes, that's the simplest possibility

And in the case of two men fighting over the same woman, you just put one in a cell and confine the other to quarters. After all, the entire base is a prison!

true. I don't think they should care about any detention/prison room/chambers. so I think it is just something to keep some people from fighting. and in the worst case the first ship back to the earth.

    There are probably more cells.
