Redline is absolutely incredible. This movie absolutely blew my mind. It took 7 years to make!

    『REDLINE』 予告編(LONG Version)

This are the anime that I'm going to recommend.

    - Nodame Cantabile [For piano, as well as classic music lovers.]
    - Gakuen Alice.
    - Hungry Heart: Wild Striker. [Football anime.]

I've recently discovered this animes, and I've been having lower grades in college because of them.

Black Rock Shooter- first season completed. It's a little confusing at first, but the world becomes much clearer later on and it's got kickass fighting.
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan- more blood then a slaughter house with plenty of laughs
Muv-luv Alternative: Total Eclipse- Large first season that still ongoing, it's a gundam type show with the humans fighting against massive and innumerable, man-eating aliens from Mars called BETA. Much more realistic then the other gundam types shows, with plenty of hot women, tight battle suits, comedy and angst, and an amazing soundtrack.

[Opening] Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse - YouTube this is the opening for muv-luv.

I find Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex a very easy yet mature series to get into. It has a wonderful developed world with great stories lines yet eases you into events slowly with some self-contained episodes.

With self-contained episodes do you mean it has no overarching continuing storyline? Is the anime episodic? Also.. I watched the movie but wasnt really that impressed even though it has gotten major praise lol. Does the series explore the themes of the movie more in depth? What is the themes of the series?

To address your first point, there is an overarching storyline, its just that its inter-laced with stand alone episodes (and the storyline episodes are called complex episdoes, get it?). These episodes often are used to build up the characters and the setting, so you shouldn't miss them if you try the series.

As for it's themes, it continues the movie's theme of what does it mean to be human. However it does go about things differently, instead using plot points and the like to communicate this, rather than simple monologs. This is one of the reasons why its not a good idea to skip the stand alone episodes.

Also I have to point out that the setting in the show is slightly different from the movie, instead of being classic cyberpunk, its move post cyberpunk. The world is still a rather crappy place and the government is corrupt and all powerful, but at the same time there are some people fighting for the people and there is still a middle class. Its sunny more times than it is raining.

Any way I would still recommend this show to anyone who likes a mix of action, intrigue and sci-fi.
