With only 5 or 6 Toruk Makto, a deep fellowship with Eywa, and the ability to access memories, I am curious about how the Na'vi describe their history and origins...their "evolution" as a people. Somehow, I doubt they'd tell of how great great uncle prolemuris lost a pair of arms on his way up the chain.

Perhaps the clans have been thus from their origins and warfare either never was for several generations until Eywa commanded it. Or maybe Eywa remained silent, letting them resolve their own conflicts. Until the first Toruk Makto (who didn't know he was at the time) wisely inquired of Eywa as to how to end the current tribal/clan conflict and lead the clans out of great sorrow.
Yup , I'm sure other clans, like the clan of the Great plains and Prairies that we see when Jake gathers the clans, domesticate even bigger species like the talioang, and maybe others we haven't yet seen! Also, the Omaticaya are great hunters and fighters on land and in air, imagine how amazing the Eastern sea clans of the Ikrans are though, specialised and airborne :D as we've also seen in the film
I laughed at the evolution theory part hahaha, I doubt the same man.
Also, one new curiousity you sparked in me is, since the next movie will probably focus more on the Seas, as James Cameron announced, I'm wondering if there will be actual Sea creatures - Makto If even us on Earth have beautiful bioluminiscent species that live underwater, in the depth of seas, imagine what creatures James may create for Pandora's sea... And I wonder if they have some kind of boats or canoes... I'm really curious now to know if they actually sail the sea or not, they can't canoe in that immensely rough sea we saw in the film. Well mainly, we've seen their ful connection and sync in the forest life of the Omaticaya, as hunters and plant gatherers, yet I don't know anything about the coast life style the other Na'vi have.
Also I agree, I wonder what the first Toruk Makto was like, and for what occasion he was chosen.

Yea I'm sure they have had skirmishes in the past( padorapedia ect.) I don't think it was as vindicave as human warfare, but what happened during individual incidents in the long past is impossible to say. The Na'vi are a great people and have a great world view, but it doesn't mean they are faultless( I don't think any sentient being is,IMHO) example Tsu'tey, great warrior, ends up being a great guy, but he did have a very human fault, arrogance(at least to Jake). So there could have been disagreements in the past, but I also think that warring periods were few and far between( as for the time of great sorrows, I could see war being a possibility, but maybe it was somethinge else? so many questions to be answered hopefully in the sequels!)

Personally I have a rather cynical view of Na'vi warfare. After doing some academic research on tribal warfare I'm willing to suggest an possible overview of Na'vi warfare.

Most warfare will be low intensity, the occasional skirmish between patrols or hunting parties. However in the overall battle plan of the war these are to scout out the enemy postion or to surround him. Once one side is in a postion of strength then there may be negotiation to solve a problem if its personal or territorial, however there will be time (like the Time of Sorrow) when full warfare is needed. There the factions seek to built themselves into a postion of absolute superiority, then the launch a sudden strike, often at night against the enemy village, aiming to kill their warriors and leaders as quickly as possible. This could explain why Tsu'tey and his warriors were on guard duty. Then the surivours are either assimilated into the victor tribe or allowed to set up their own tribe.

Such a system is seen across the own in human tribal warfare.

It's an interesting question. It reminds me of following lines I have read over Eywa in the original script:

"One vast sentience, covering all the land. And everything that walks and breaths and lives within it is apart of it. It is like a government, which keeps everything inbalance. That's why the Na'vi don't kill, or make war. No ownership,no territory. They are given all they need... a place to live, a part in the great pageant of life here."

Maybe it's a little bit too perfect to be up to date.

I personly beleave Cameron used many very real tribal lore storys and examples in Avatar , I beleave this was done so that people from many diffrent cultures around the world would "relate" to what they saw in a sublime manor from there inner memory from there heart "But" these storys where embedded under Avatars fantasy Shell lets take an example "Neytiri speaks to Jake after they are almost killed by Toruk "She speaks of a time of "Great Sorrow" where "Toruk Makto" brought "The people" together after a time of great sorrorw , A great leader that came and brought the people together" Or bonded the people together with great message of peace while we can will never be sure until Cameron himself reveals whats behind this Na'Vi history from the past " take a look at north american native lore spoken on here here this speaks of a great tribal war almost a thousand years ago and the great leader that had the wisdom to show a people at war a vision for there future that truly opened there eyes to a deep understanding that "We are all Related" we are Connected as a people,, He bound the people together in a time of great sorrow that action represents the deep moral values and understanding and an understanding of accountability we all could learn much from "today" , Avatar "mirrors" many native lore storys from around the world and I think its posable some people deep inside have " sublime memorys" of this this, if this is realy true one could just guess what reconnection to such a inner memory might do in questioning our understanding of our inner accountability and moral values. it would be intresting to see peoples opinions on this.
