I prefer a good cpu over gpu anyday. I think I might not need more than 8gb of ram in my lifetime.

I want it to be balanced, so if one part of the system chokes, the whole thing will evenly. Cause with some of these GPU's, they can become more powerful than the CPU, and that's kind of a waste.

A GPU has a different more efficient instruction set, though it is not general purpose. I really have no need for advanced graphical displays generally I need one that is good enough to keep my cpu idle for important tasks and the gpu can handle the screen drawing.

Yup. It's amazing how far it has come. Graphics cards are now like mini super-computers. It would be nice if I could find a renderer that can take advantage of the nVidia's CUDA cores and even the main GPU, as this will REALLY speed up render time, as well as heat up my room!

Verily. We are easily approaching the wall were the speed of transfer is slower than the rate data is computed.

Yup. We need to develop faster transfer buses, and find ways to increase bandwidth.

You know, that Mari tool sounds like gold right now. I made my face into an avatar, and texturing it leaves me with seams. Even though I'm painting the UV using Cinema 4D's BodyPaint. GAWD!
And it also becomes clear how hard it was to make the characters look as damn good as they do. A simple color map leaves me with a Toy Story character. Anyone know exactly what kinds of texture maps they needed? Bump, diffuse, specular, glow...?
But then again, they're a professional industry, so whatever...

Easily lowered to 256 with some trimming.
Not so in the Windows world. Applications bloat, er, I mean expand, to keep up with new hardware improvements. The old spec machine I was talking about won't even run XP on it without a RAM upgrade and as for Win 7 the basic install won't even fit on the hard drive. I had to take the Antivirus software off of that machine because it simply used up the all the available RAM and the machine ground to a halt due to paging out memory on the hard drive. As I said 5 and not 2 years is a useful life, after that it's still going to work, but its going to have an increasing struggle.

But thats the nature of the Wintel business. The cycle of hardware obsolescence makes big bucks for the hardware manufacturers and Microsoft too. Linux distro's are of course exempt from this cycle which make them great for restoring life to old hardware, hence my previous point.

Having said that though, improved hardware and the resulting sheer computing grunt is what makes things like Avatar possible. So it's not all bad.

Hey guys, guess what? I found a program called PFTrack, it let's you track certain parts of a video. The tracking data can then be imported into a 3D package as key framed points, that then could be used to drive a 3D model. See where I'm going with this?
