I know. I have to make it so the points on the model correspond to the tracked motion, but then I would have to make it so the surrounding points morph to keep up with the specifics. And any camera motion could cause problems. Speaking of camera motion, I could take a fake camera from the real world and track it's data. But here comes the complex problem of tracking in 3 dimensions with multiple cameras. I hope I can figure this out. Morphing multi-million polygon objects by had is not fun...But I am learning some new stuff thanks to some fellow YouTubers... You know, in ZBrush, i still have the problem of making eyelids and a mouth. I know one of the Avatar concept designers online. Maybe I'll contact him! Scott Patton... that's his name. Wonder if he's in the credits... I'll check that out..

"When I was first your teacher, I hated all Sky People. But you have also taught me. Spirit is all that matters. I am with you now, Jake. We are mated for life" "We are?" "Yes, it is our way. Oh, I forgot to tell?"
That's pure gold. They should have left that in.... I would have cried like a baby.

Well, personally, I would us Mac OS X Server, but your only 'legal' options are Apple's U1 rack mount server, or the Mac mini, and I would like something custom. But for simple tasks, like rendering, using it as a storage node, hosting a website, ect, Ubuntu and just about every other form of Linux will do the job. I just find them harder to admin, so for extensive admin use, OS X FTW! But who is going to admin a server? We admin the whole thing from a remote computer, and that remote computer can run about any OS you want... So as long as you have the programs on Ubuntu, no problem...
Thread is way off topicMore like,
Avatar:
Digital matte paintings & concept art in Photoshop.
Create base geometrical models and assets in Maya.
Detail and sculpt in ZBrush & Mudbox, Mari for detailed texturing at Weta.
Set up your rigs in Maya and MOCAP/animate with MotionBuilder.
Render with Renderman and composite the final shots & passes with Nuke.
(Someone forgot to remove the main shadow pass for Jake & Neytiri's banshee ride together in the credits on one of the clips lol)
Possibly used Vue by E-on for BG plate 3d projection of some foliage in post.
Bring it all together/edit with Avid for sure, print, done.
I'm positive other software was utilized such as 3ds Max or Lightwave for some models simply because of the collaborative effort, but the packages listed above I'm familiar with and very sure were used somewhere in their pipeline. I myself am a Maya & Nuke user but I dabble in other software when I get the chance.

Sorry digging up an old thread here I know, but wow you use Maya and Nuke. That's a potent mix! I presume you do it for a living? Me, I just do it for a hobby, and not all the frequently these days and there is not enough time in the day. :-( I use Cinema 4D, I do have Combustion, but really prefer After Effects. Editing I use Sony stuff: Vegas 10, Soundforge 10, Cinescore 1 and thats about it. The most recent Avatar related stuff I've done was some animation and compositing (for the end credits) in the Avatar Communities Film Project 'Our Only Home'.
