I only saw Avatar once in 3D. The 2D version was best for me (just saw it again last night--woot!) My eyeballs get too much of a workout from 3D movies in general.

Twice in IMAX, and once in 2D.

No headaches from it, but I sat half way up in the middle. Seemed to be the best for me. Too close to the screen and I would get a headache and a neck ache.

I have seen the film 3 times twice in Dolby 3D and once in real D , I realy think the Dolby 3D system has less light loss then Real D , one of the primary issues in 3D viewing confort is image brightness , many cinema owners cut back the projector brightness to conserve lamp life, this realy hurts any 3D film as the eyes struggle to focus on a low contrast image. dolby 3D does not require a silver screen like any polerized 3D system Real D / Master Image, but is becoming hard to find as cinema owners dont want to fuss with cleaning glasses , overall I would say the most important thing with Avatar or any other 3D film is quality presentation that means sharp image focus , and enougth screen brightness to compensate for the light loss the glasses and 3D system cause , I had no viewing issues with the dolby 3D system the real D showing I saw was not bright enougth , and gave me a headache but I have seen other 3D films in Real D that where fine at a difrent cinema.

I watched both versions (3D and 2D) when in theaters. I didn't really notice the 3D effect, and the 3D version did give me a minor headache, but they were both fair shows
