It's a long shot, though, yes.
Jake does get a few rounds fired off at the Thanator, however, it does have heavy armor. In the end battle scene, I noticed that Quaritch uses a knife to the ribs to dispatch the thanator, seeing how vicious it was in the first place, I'm surprised he was able to get the better of it, but I guess wearing an AMP suit does give him an edge.

I remembering reading the part on the thanator in the Survival Guide regarding that it's only weak points are around the respritory system. And rewatching the film, I realized that the thanator literally steals Jake's gun right out of his hands in the first attack scene; that's one smart creature.

i have never really thought of it that way... but yeah its a possibility i think.. we have seen what Eywa have done and can do.

if I put my tought in it, eywa has already chose their toruk makto. because the thanator seperate jake and grace. and so jake could come in touch with the omaticaya. and become toruk makto.

(my tought, when jake flys with neytiri toruk try to kill him, so toruk choose jake as his rider. maybe in "order" from eywa)

Toruk and Thanators are predators that would prey on Na'vi, so you can't make the argument that everyone who is attacked is being chosen as a rider. Ikrans on the other hand only attack their chosen rider, the rest flee.

There's also a couple of problems with suggesting that Ewya arranged Jake's separation, the first of which is that Jake had been on the planet for less than a week with no interaction with the Na'vi or other Pandoran life. I guess it comes down to how much of a divine entity you view Eywa as, which problematically brings up the deus ex machina argument. When exactly Jake was 'chosen' and how Eywa knew to choose him is the issue there.

You're right about that:the Palulukan, and Toruk, would kill any prey on Pandora, but there's other threads too where we spoke about this issue, because altough what i just wrote is obvious, the possibility that Jake was attacked by both of them, could be part of Eywa's plan to lead him to become Toruk Makto It's like God Almighty, with his prophets, he had a plan for all of them He has a plan for all of us too

the thanator animation of the THANATOR ATTACK needs to be mentioned ... it was definitely animal, definitely human, in the way it tore out those roots to get at Jake, and the angrky way it nearly threw itself after him down the waterfall ... proper (hungry) intent.

one of my favourite scenes ...

Oh, I guess you've all heard this but it was my first time (I've always been a late starter, LOL) it's an interview with James Cameron about Avatar (screen writing proces) that has THANATOR-relevant content that was quite the revelation ... and it was a shock how the HOME TEAM ADVANTAGE speech came about. Very interesting.

I agree with Scott; the attack of the Thanator would have been a rare occurrence. This creature would be the apex land predator on Pandora. This would mean a small number of stealthy individuals. Few and far between. Grace’s reaction meant that she probably knew of its reputation, but she probably had not seen one so close.

In the scene, I do not believe that the Thanator was sent by Eywa. The animal was hunting a natural prey. Jake had startled a lone Hammerhead Titanothere. It is slightly away from the herd that we don’t see until later. It gets even farther away while posing with Jake. The Thanator was stalking this animal and Jake in his playful way had interrupted this animal’s hunt.

The ability of Jake to avoid being ripped into a million pieces and actually escaping one of the most feared creatures on the planet probably got Eywa’s attention. Jake’s leap off the waterfalls was the pivotal point; he scored major jungle cred! Eywa was probably thinking, “oooh, what do we have here?”
