Default Look folks Avatar was written in 1993.

For those that compare it to Last Samurai, Princess Mononoke, Pocahontas etc. IT was written before them because Cameron didn't want to film it in 1994 or 1995 because the technology wasn't advanced then and he waited until 2004 to greenlight his project.

Avatar is basically influenced by Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Frank Herbert's Dune novels than Dances with Wolves because he adores Nausicaa and Dune.

While I'm not going to argue originality of scripts...

    1) The story of Pocahontas was around long before Disney made an animated film
    2) Ferngully was 1992 ( Funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-SVpZrnF34 )
    3) Last Samurai was also criticized for it's comparison to Dances with Wolves, never heard of people chain linking these things before, just compare it directly to Dances with Wolves?
    4) Oh and I almost forgot this gem from the studio that created Delgo: http://news.prnewswire.com/DisplayRe...5083008&EDATE=
    5) 1957 novella Call Me Joe: http://screenrant.com/avatar-plot-ja...oe-ross-32369/

That's interesting stuff. For me, though I'm not so bothered about originality. I think there are only 36 possible plot lines anyway and all stories come from these. The thing for me is in the way the story is told and the message it tries to give. Otherwise there is not point in telling it. Avatar, for me, was told in an almost perfect way, with the right quantities of ingredients, mixed in the right way and cooked to an optimum level and allowed us to be transported to another world for a few hours and bring us back to ponder things.

Very well said, JC's ability to send a message with multiple themes through the use of a well thought, intelligent and mesmerizing film is not something you encounter with most movies.

That is very interesting, all these people who are saying it's not very original look like fools now lol. I agree with Alan, as much as I like the story, for me it's more about the message in it and the way it all comes together. Crazy how Avatar has been in progress since 1993, so glad it all turned out to be incredible after such a long time.

Anyone glad Cameron had to wait until 2005 to greenlight the movie since 1993?

For those still comparing Avatar to Fern Gully, would you really like to have seen the Na'vi in '90's era CGI? Seriously, do you want your eyes to bleed or die of suffering from watching a poorly rendered blue lady prancing through a jungle?

    Sometimes I don't understand people.
It means "Wind Rider" in Na'vi.

Here's the question though. Would you want the 1993 story with the 2009 characters, or all 2009?

Thanks for sharing that link, I hope more people read it. I really knew nothing of Project 880 until I finished reading that article, really interesting stuff.
