Ikran "Cheating"? Toruk and other Ikran?

I was wondering why it was that Jake was able to have two Ikran, and what will happen to Toruk, seeing as he "is no longer needed" in the end. It seemed as though one would only be able to have one Ikran, due to the lifelong bond each Hunter has with it, so I guess it must've just been a necessary thing for the storyline for Jake to make Tsaheylu with Toruk. Also, it seems wierd, due to the fact that Toruk never really "chose" Jake.

Yeah this bothered me too.
I would assume that since the Toruk flew away, Jake can go back to his original Ikran. Maybe only the Ikran needs to "choose" Jake, and not the Toruk.

Also, Naytiri said that an Ikran will only fly with one hunter for the rest of his life. This does not necessarily imply the other way around: a hunter must only fly with one Ikran. Meaning, there may be nothing against a hunter having multiple Ikrans, biologically, but I am guessing having multiple Ikrans might be looked down upon.

I guess one can ask other related questions: Naytiri's Ikran died, so can she get a new one? Also, the other way around, if the Ikran's hunter dies, can the Ikran be "captured" by another hunter?

It was said that the Ikran only have one rider during their lifetime. Toruk isn't an Ikran.

It is true an ikran will only fly with one hunter in its lifetime. But, that does not mean that a hunter will only be able to ride one ikran in their lifetime.

I think Toruk did choose Jake. I think this happened during the scene where Neytiri and Jake was chased by Toruk. While looking at the scene it looks like Toruk is primarily chasing Jake. As Neytiri said that you would know that an ikran has chosen you when it tries to kill you.

Well this is simple. Toruk, is not a Ikran, therefore, the biological factors do not apply similarly to both!

Jake only had one Ikran during the film - when he's in the wasteland it's his personal Ikran who flies down to meet him:

HIS BANSHEE -- bonded for life -- flaps down to a landing in

Regarding the ability for Na'vi to take another Ikran it's hard to know whether this is possible. We know from the scriptment that once two Na'vi are mated, (remember that Nav'i mating involves Tsaheylu) they are mated for life, so since this is a mutual thing (male and female are both permanently bonded) one would guess that permanent mutual bonds do exist on Pandora. This would pose a problem for widows of Na'vi aytaronyu since they would likely remain widows for life. This has interesting consequences on the anthropology on Pandora, since the death of a spouse is so much more damaging too the community, it's likely this (and their believe in Eywa and general pacifist ways) that means there is little inter-clan warfare on Pandora.

Tsaheylu with pa'li (and probably paluluka) is non permanent, as specifically stated in the movie.

It's possible that the permanence of the Tsaheylu between Ikran and Na'vi is related to their common ancestry - Na'vi and Ikran are the only two creatures on Pandora we see with only four limbs. If this theory is correct then Tsaheylu with Toruk is likely fleeting as well.

My personal guess is that Neytiri will be able to take another Ikran, but nobody will be able to be Tsaheylu with Jake's Toruk again since that bond would be permanent (but people could Tsaheylu with other aytoruk if they wanted)

When Neytiri speaks of her grandfather's grandfather the Toruk Makto she says "toruk chose him" so I believe a toruk should choose a rider. This particular toruk definitely chooses Jake.

The Toruk left at the end, it seems they don't bond for life like Ikran.
