Question How did the human body of Jake Sully die after his consciousness transfer?

Would the human body of Jake Sully die instantaneously after his consciousness transfer, or would it live in a vegetative state until death from lack of oxygen minutes later? Neytiri removed his Exopack. Did she want to make sure he wouldn't come back as human?

No the human body does not die after consciousness transfer. It is like a Na'vi body with no conscious.
Neytiri removed his exopack so the human body dies. I think Jake and Neytiri discussed about it. Jake's human body is not operationnal, he cant walk, he cant do anything with this body. So maybe he asked Neytiri to remove the exopack after transfer.

I agree with this. Jake wanted to live in his new Avatar Body. He did not want to continue in his current form. Him and Neytiri must of discussed this.

They should have left human Jake alive. That way they would have two Jakes. Human Jake could help Na'vi Jake with his duties.

Human Jake would have been permanently comatose following a transfer of consciousness from one body to another.

Yes. Jake's Human body would have expired from suffocation once the Exopack was removed, but there would have been no trauma, as Jake's consciousness had already been transfered into his Avatar body. There's only one consciousness involved, and that had gone from point A, to point B, so point A would have been a true example of 'the lights being on, but no-one being home'... Autonomic functions for a few minutes before suffocation, but no conscious perception of them as far as Jake would have been concerned, as he would only have been aware of the sensory input of his Avatar body.

Wouldn't there be some kind of autonomic response though? Like gasping for breath or choking despite the lack of consciousness?

i tend to go with the teaching of Jake's mentor,Neytiri. 'all energy is only borrowed, and one day you have to give it back' well,Jake was basically serving two masters in a sense, the human one and the Na'vi one, thus using a lot of energy, and once he made the decision of transference,it would only be right to give that energy back, the human one. i still find it deeply touching that after Neytiri removes Jakes exopack, she lovingly kisses his eyes, sending his human energy back to the universe and Eywa. now,i know some people would debate that his human energy went into the avatar, but i disagree, because he went into the eye of Eywa, and was reborn as a Na'vi,it's now Na'vi energy even though he will retain his soul and memories,he IS a Na'vi now. and yes,i agree with earlier posters, that Jake no longer wanted to be in his human body, and no doubt discussed this with his soulmate,Neytiri. man, this movie is deep on so many levels...

It's an interesting subject. Under human law, taking off human Jake's exo-pack could be considered murder. But by Na'vi 'law' it would be a mercy-killing such as we saw for Tsu'tey in the extended version. Good thing the humans were driven out and Na'vi laws were in effect!
