Default Getting Norm out of the Way

Remember how Norm, after his avatar is killed/wounded comes out of his link capsule and then a little while later we see him walking through the forest with a gun and an angry expression on his face? I've always like that part. It shows that Norm has totally committed himself to the Na'vi cause and is apparently going out to try and take down a few RDA guys before he's killed himself (or maybe he's angry at Trudy's death although I'm not sure he could have known about that yet).

But even though I've watched the movie dozens of times I only just recently realized that the real reason Norm stomped off into the forest was strictly a plot device: Cameron had to get Norm out of the shack!

Imagine if he'd still been there! Jake and Quaritch are fighting. Quaritch pops the canopy of his AMP suit and then tells Jake "You think you're one of them? Time to wake up!" Then he turns toward the shack--and there's Norm standing on the little porch with an assault rifle! Norm blows Quaritch away Game over. Not quite so dramatic!

So Norm, go get lost for a while, will you?

Oddly enough, in the original scriptment, the only role he plays in the final battle is to use that saw-machine to slice through the HQ area (which falls to Dr. Patel in the movie). Interesting thoughts there though.
It means "Wind Rider" in Na'vi.

possible, although i still think of it as he was mad about his Avatar getting hurt (possibly killed) and he suddenly went scarface and decided to show everyone who they were ****ing with >:D only if we got a scene of him just wasting a few bad guys like it was nothing.... would have been awesome.

I've always thought it was Norm going out to kick some RDA butt after they wounded and/or killed his Avatar. Someone here suggested some months back (was it tm20? I don't remember now) that he was going out to find his Avatar and provide what medical aid he could under the circumstances.

I figured out the reason he was leaving the shack was so that he would not be around when Jake and Quaritch had their final battle. I figured that out the first time I saw the movie, but it is interesting to speculate on the reasons why Norm was leaving the shack.

Was he going out to fight in his human form, or to find his Avatar and give it medical treatment? I don't imagine we'll ever know unless Cameron answers that question in the novel.
Here's my Avatar fan fiction. Give it a read, if you're so inclined.

Good point there, I noticed that and thought it was good that Norm got out of there when he could. That and these kinds of set-ups are pretty common in stories. Likewise, in Star Wars Obi-Wan dies because if you realize it, after the Death Star he doesn't have a lot to do, expect maybe telling Luke to use the Force.

Actually, I think that Quaritch crushes the middle of the three pods which is the one Grace was using. Norm's is at one end and Jake's was at the other. I think

+1 I can imagine that norm is angry about his avatar. and he also know that he can't get another avatar.

I agree with you guys and for the story to go as planned he needed to get out of the shack. But also if I try to put myself in his shoes I would have a very hard time "waking up" after my Avatar was shot and just hanging out in the shack. I would want to run back out and fight someone or like SnowRider said, go find my Avatar and see what can be done to save it. Curious if Eywa will be able to take Norm and make him into his Avatar permanently like was done with Jake?
