The Top 5 Reasons People Say Avatar Sucks (And Why They're Wrong)

So after numerous battles with friends before and after seeing Avatar I have compiled the top five reasons why people tend not to like the film (though these people are a vocal minority) and have tried my best to debunk each.

It took a fairly long while to write, so I wanted to share it here:

Re: the Unobtanium. I at first thought it was kind of a lame name, but the Avatar book sheds some light on the name. Before it's discovery, scientists on Earth were looking for just the right kind of superconductive element, and sadly they came to the conclusion that they were never going to find it: it was unobtainable. So, when doing research, instead of saying "oh we're looking for that element that has properties x, y, and z", they just referred to it as "unobtanium". Then when they found Pandora, and found a material that met properties x, y, and z, they stuck with the name.

Also, as I said in another thread, the fact that this is a reiteration of an archetypal story shouldn't detract from the movie. Shakespeare did it with most of his plays, but do we deride him for it? Generally, no. I honestly don't get why people get so defensive of Pocahontas, Ferngully, or DWW, either. They are archetypes of the same story, yet people seem to love them and not criticize them for utilizing a "cliche", "unoriginal" idea. Why hate on Avatar? It boggles. It truly boggles.

Great article, thank you. Explained how I feel every time I see a critic say any of those 5. All though I will agree with #1 about plot being cliche and predictable... but you know what, I liked it just that way.
