Geesh, every time a successful author comes out with a book or a script, they get sued from some obscure person who claims to have had the idea first. It happened with JK Rowling. Clearly, these people just want some of the money that is being generated. I am wondering if these sort of frivolous lawsuits can be curtailed??

He did not steal that either. The reason for the settlement is explained in the biography of James Cameron "The Futurist".
