Default For you, what is ''seeing'' ?

When Neytiri first met Jake, she told him ''sky people can not learn, they do not see''. She didn't tell him exactly what she meant by ''see''. Throughout the movie, we are familiarized with the concept of seeing, without having a clear definition of it. Like we know that they make tsahaylu, but there's a lot more to it than just using their queues. So I'm asking you guys, for you, what is your definition of ''seeing'' ?

appreciating or respecting the natural world and to use it wisely. also to have respect and care for others (to me, "seeing" is more about respecting the natural world, but since the Na'vi greeting is "I see you" i guess they apply the same mentality to the people they live with as well)
There are many dangers on Pandora, and one of the subtlest is that you may come to love it too much.

Seeing and understanding the forest itself and taking care / respecting each and every animal on Pandora and taking care and respecting the Na'vi, treating each and everyone like they are part of the family...

    Or something like that

Their version of seeing is feeling, appreciating, being one with what they are "seeing"

"seeing" would be understanding and choosing to follow their belief system.

Wow I love this thread I hadn't seen it before today ^_^ Well, I believe that 'Seeing' for the Na'vi, is such an incredible concept, that it's hard to translate to english words, apart from the verb 'To see'. For me, Seeing means many things, first of all, understanding someone, seeing inside him, seeing what someone really Is, including a feeling of love and compassion for a friend and also, it means I feel for you, or something like that I love this 'Seeing', in our lives, I believe that seeing means to be on the right path It's so beautiful, 'Oel Ngati Kameie', when Neytiri says it with such a lovely tender soothing voice, I melt, and 'Oe Kameie' her too

I think it is a recognition of another. An acceptance of them, as they are. The counterview would be to 'not see', which means that you are shunning them. That for you and perhaps for your group, they 'the unseen' do not exist. To be seen, I think, would be a great honour. But so devastating to be told that 'I cannot see you'!

when Neytiri says to Jake that skypeople do not See,she meant that the humans do not live in harmony with their enviroment, they do not coexist, they take take take but don't give anything in return. it is the truest example of the unbridgable gap between the two species, other than distance,life-giving gases, and home planets. the Na'vi live as a part of their enviroment,as a link in the chain, taking what they need for survival and leaving no detrimental marks on the forest and surroundings. modern humans have no concept of this way of thinking, viewing themselves as the top of the food chain, the alpha species,so to speak, and so can never See. Ney is very right in her observation of the skypeople, watching them strip-mine,clear-cut huge tracts of forest, lay huge concrete runways, needlessly kill the local wildlife for sport and because they are too close to the fences, kill her people including her dearest sister, fill the sky with pollution, machines, noise, and you know what? we do the very same things here on terra, and so the rda brought the human misery condition to Pandora. skypeople truly cannot See...

Seeing is knowing your place in the universe, your role as a link in the chain, that everything is connected, and the actions of one affect the whole. you are a part of the enviroment.

    Excellent comment J'ak.
For the most part, I live and work in the natural environment. I grow crops and rear animals. I have a constant battle against the elements, living as I do in a fairly hostile environment. But get this. I have never 'felt' nearer to 'Earth' than I do now. Never felt more complete or more satisfied, than at this moment.
But humans on the whole are a depraved species. Taking but not giving back. Raping the earth to satisfy their own greed. Believing that they are top of the tree, when in fact they really are at the bottom of the dung heap.
I co-exist with my fellow creatures. They have taught me more valuable lessons than education ever did!
