Noticed it now, never did it before.

I don't think it is special because neytiri would be the next tsahik and she doesn't have it.

Six pages in and I'm not sure if this link has already been highlighted ... but here's a good page on the Na'Vi re: braided queue, and mating

I'm not even sure, though, if this is accepted knowledge from THE SOURCE or just wild speculation from A.N.OTHER BLOGGER.
new 'genreclectic' novels available Yoroppa and View from a Stolen Window.

    IMO- It's braided after birth.
There is no way that hair can do that on it's own accord. Hair has no muscles in it, right? We can't control our hair, I don't see how the Na'vi can.
Unless, of course, the hair that is close to the Queue is super sensitive and can manipulate itself. But I honestly doubt that. It has to be braided by family or their mate. Pictures! Sorry they are so small- click them to make them bigger

This is a baby, yes, but it isn't a newborn baby. It's older, look at the other hair around the queue.

This is a newborn na'vi baby. It has no queue. Look at the amount of hair on it's head. I think that the Na'vi are not born with their queue, it grows with them. This makes sense because the teenish Na'vi would have much longer braids, and they would be the same as an adults.
It keeps it porportionate, so it only makes sense that it's braided by others.
I just noticed that in the 'survival guide' there is a picture with Na'vi in front of hometree where also a baby can be seen. It has no hair and no queue. The picture and the one shown above are actually concept art (also shown in the making-of book) and therefore not strictly canon.
I would guess a newborn Na'vi has a short queue (like a prolemuris).
