I highly doubt the na'vi even know what hand to hand combat is. This is a completely different planet from earth. There's no boxing, mma, karate, etc etc. All they know is how to handle primitive weapons, like bows, staffs, knives, etc. So I would say their fighting style is "primitive fighting".

Altough they dont do MMA i wouldn't call them primitive, if Neytiri or any other Omaticaya wanted to kill Jake, if Eywa hadn't sent the pure spirits as a message to save him, Jake would have been Dead in a tic, Neytiri would have put an arrow through him, or Tsu'tey after catching him could have taken him out in a flash if he wanted, so i think that yes, the Na'vi are mainly taronyu, hunters, and they use weapons, Very well, but they aint puppies bare hands either Neylove is the way

Oh yeah I have no doubt Ney or Tsutey could kill Jake in an instant........with primitive weapons (bow, staff, knife).

We never see them use hand to hand combat and even Tsu'tey, the best warrior the Omaticaya has to offer, couldn't defend himself against Jake's skills. The Na'vi are experienced in all forms of weapons combat but hand to hand? Not likely.

I'm sure the Na'vi know what hand to hand combat is, but like Avatar Fanatic said, we hardly ever get to see it exercised in the film. But, there is one short instance of it, that is when Jake punches Tsu'tey in the face the day after Jake and Neytiri's night under The Tree of Voices. Aside from that, this action could also be Jake's natural act of defense, seeing that he was a former army dog. It could not be related to the Na'vi style of fighting after all.

Being a peaceful population as they are, the Na'vi, I don't think they have tae kwon do and mma lessons like us, since I doubt they do much combat between themselves. They are Hunters, they can fight against any other creature on Pandora pretty much, with their ability with weapons, bows, spears and knives, plus they ride horses and Ikrans. So, in 1 on 1 combat a trained human would probably win, but on the whole, the Na'vi are incredible fighters

I would tend to think that they would have some hand-to hand fighting experience, I mean there may be Na'vi hunters/warriors that would want to challenge an opponent with out the intent of killing there foe( I know the Na'vi are mostly peaceful, but I would still think you would have some bumping egos( you know, who is going to be the top hunter of the clan or something like that, or two clans sending thier strongest fighters to settle something on rare occasions.)) Either way I don't think I would want to find out by experience, they seem pretty tough to me.

I doubt the Na'vi would have any fixed marital art style, limited travel between tribes make it difficult for ideas to spread. Instead they would develop rough regional style like street gangs. A lot of kicking and punching without much organisation of strategy.

Than again they may have martial arts sports but its probadly some kind of wrestling or boxing based around fixed postions and protocol, not that good for spontaneous use.

Every one knows how to fight, some more skillfully than others. If you or a loved one is threatened, you will put up your dukes. I disagree with the idea that the Na’vi could not use hand to hand in a combat situation. And I would further disagree that they somehow do not have skills to “compete” against human “martial arts.”

There seems to be some slight misunderstanding of the term “martial arts” in this group. Martial arts are systems of combat that have developed in their regions based on the pressures of survival. Wushu and MMA are sport arts derived from traditions of self defense. Many of our systems today have evolved away from the original requirement of self defense. Most people who train in a martial arts dojo today are not equipped for personal protection.

The Na’vi exhibit extremely strong abilities in regard to attacking and defending themselves. They are faster, stronger and live in a world requiring agility, clear vision and pin point awareness. This awareness is a clear understanding of body movement with regard to their surroundings. They do not need a Gi to be lethal with their hands. Based on the fact that there is some violent interaction between the clans, all forms of combat would be generally trained into the members. Anyone who has trained with any weapon knows that it is only an extension of your hands and mind.

Jake only won by surprise. Tsu’tey initial rush was headlong and easily misdirected by Jake shifting his weight off line. Tsu’tey’s backhand slash was on target and Jake only just missed having his Pectoral muscles flayed open. A little higher and that sweep would have cut the jugular; game over. In his next attack, Tsu’tey over-extended with his knife arm in his desire to kill Jake with a thrust allowing Jake to move inside and punish him. Tsu’tey was not done: he was only thrown off his balance and temporarily disarmed. He had been deposited right over his knife and could have been right back if not for Jake invoking his right to speak. It is highly likely that his next attack would not have been headlong and the Recon Marine would have seen something very different. If Jake was real good, he would have placed Tsu’tey away from his knife and would have been on top of his prone adversary keeping him subdued before addressing the clan. (Movie fights suck, IMHO)

When Tsu’tey was about to kill Jake’s Avatar, Neytiri quickly threw Tsu’tey bodily away. He flew quite a distance from the energy that her throw generated. That was a sweet bit if Jujitsu/Judo. Tsu’tey was able in a matter of seconds to kill three Secops on the Shuttle ramp and knock out of action two others. So, just because they do not have a formalized “martial art” does not mean that they could not defend themselves with their hands.

    Dismissed!

If they are anything like aboriginal tribes from earth, its not likely they would have much in the name of martial arts or combat training. Just weapon combat, and even that wasn't TOO advanced.
