    Default Hammocks?

What are the hammocks, "natural" or manufactured?

the ASG, the online Pandorapedia and the Wiki describes the hammocks as woven from rope and twine, thus manufactured.

On the other hand, the blu-ray pandorapedia describes the hammocks as plants that are cultivated in hometree (and partly manufactured by weaving the strands):
"THE HAMMOCK IS ACTUALLY A LIVING EPIPHYTE PLANT, WHICH IS ENCOURAGED TO GROW IN THE SPOKES OF A GREAT TREE WHERE THE NA‘VI WANT IT, USING CERTAIN HERBAL PHEROMONES AND PLANT EXTRACTS. WHEN THE LIVING "ROPES" ARE LONG ENOUGH, THEY ARE BRAIDED INTO THE HAMMOCK SHAPE BY THE NA'VI. THIS CREATES A LIVING ENCLOSURE, WHICH REACTS TO THE NA'VI'S TOUCH, CLOSING ON COMMAND."

the movie supports the last version, since the hammock moves by touching and shows bioluminescence. The lower part looks like a bud, and the upper part is manufactured.

Thanks for this info Harrie I've always loved the hammocks, and i think Neytiri looks absolutely STUNNING when she's lying in it... Finally I know how they work now, they're like 'trained' plants, awesome ^_^

Interesting... I kinda think they may be a combination of manufactured (due to the woven areas on the hammock) and plant. It would make sense, since the Na'vi seem to employ a lot of these combinations into their culture.
It means "Wind Rider" in Na'vi.

i love this perfect example of coexisting with your enviroment, and the hammocks look great and comfortable. it still saddens me though, the loss of Hometree, their ancestral home, these beautiful hammocks, and the comfiness and ambience of the Omaticayan home. sad, very sad only....

^ Indeed. That would be awesome to have a touch-sensitive canopy on it.

And still my question is, are the hammocks a life. Maybe part of the tree. Or home made.

They must be living organisms. I don't think the Na'vi could make anything synthetic that responds like that.
