Default Glorified pig latin! (warning this is a rant..a long rant)

ok so apparently I thought I was really over Avatar and I could just think of it as a movie that impacted me, that is it! No more mourning! no more tears! But I just got into this argument with my sister when I brought up that different people around the world are learning this language and using as like a go between langauge. "They're retards." She replies. "Wait what?" I couldn't BELIEVE she said that. I was so offended. She goes. "I can't believe you're learning a fake made up language from a bunch of STUPID LOOKING FAKE BLUE PEOPLE!". I just stared kind of in shock and then said. "For one the language wasnt made up from the na'vi, it was made up from a linguistics guy who developed the language for the movie, but it is a learnable langauge." "OH PLEASE IT'S GLORIFIED PIG LATIN!" That one got me I felt like I was punched in the gut and out of no where tears started to well up in my eyes. I'm thinking 'wtf?' So I told her "Pig latin you can learn in a day, you act like you've actually tried to learn na'vi" "I wouldn't do something so stupid! It's a waist of time! What GOOD comes out of this?! How is this CONSTRUCTIVE?!" She has quite a temper when you disagree with her. Then she continued on just yelling at me about how stupid and blue the na'vi look and how people are somehow being selfish by not doing something 'more constructive'. I tried to explain that it was just a hobby to people...unfortunately in a broken up voice... "I don't care what you say, PEOPLE ARE DUMB IT'S NOT EVEN A REAL LANGUAGE, PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE!" It ended like that because I couldn't stand hearing anymore plus I couldn't let her see me cry over this....sighhh....I just really needed to vent...I'm so glad I have these forums...I'll no longer bring Avatar up to my family I'll unfortunately only be able to talk about it here...I mean even my mom was shaking her head and right now as I'm typing she just asked "If you could, would you turn blue?" of course I answered "No because noone else HERE is blue". and she goes "Well noone else hear knows Na'vi either...". and shook my head and said. "No one in this HOUSE. There are plenty of people that want to learn na'vi and that DO no na'vi, just not YOU guys." She just smiled at me...you know that smile people make when they think you are naive... Then she goes "But who are these people?" and I answer "Avatar Fanatics Like Me." She just shook her head at me and said "Come out of the clouds..". sigh...I love my family (I guess), but I just feel so alone like all I have are my dog and cat who understand me more than the people that've b een around me all my life! I know I have the forums but...I don't live in the forums and now my sister is trying to act like nothing happened..she doesn't realise what she's done to me....well that's all.. I'm just having a hard time coping with the fact about how alone I really am. Really I just want to tell her to F*** off.

Everyone is a fan of something and being a dedicated fan doesn't mean anything is wrong with you.

This is the first time I've ever been a fan of something that I really wanted to follow, but lots of people are fans of other things.

[top]Here are a few things to consider

    1. Some people go to concerts to see their favorite band... (pointless)

    2. Some people are actually addicted to sites like Facebook... (pointless)

    3. Some people get on 4-wheelers or drive big trucks and go muddin. (pointless)

    4. Some people go to football games to cheer on their favorite team... (pointless)

    5. People have crushes or fantasies about being married to celebrities... (pointless)

    6. Think of all the people following Lindsay Lohan on Facebook and Twitter... (pointless)

    7. You wish to learn a language and that sounds more productive to me than what most people do.

    [top]Being a fan is "retarded?"

Basically from what I gather based on your sister's reasoning she can't be a fan of anything. No television shows, movies, music, etc...

Has your sister ever sung along with a song? She HAS?! Why?! Isn't it pointless? I guess she's retarded too... EVERYONE is a fan of something.

Having fun and being happy isn't retarded and neither is being a fan of something fun that makes you happy.

Learning a language is only as retarded as learning the lyrics to a song or even learning how to play an instrument.

Sometimes people aren't always able to connect with something and a lot of people just see Avatar as another movie.

For those of us here Avatar is much more than just another movie. In fact, this is THE movie that changed everything for me.

    When you're here you're home.

    [top]Perspective

What your family sees is a movie with limited alien dialect so they believe you are interested in learning a language with limited words and you must admit that does sound silly. So maybe if you show them how extensive the language is they'll understand that this fictional language is real. I'm actually shocked at how complete the language is and as you know a real linguist is creating it, but what you may not know is that the Na'vi language is based off of real languages here on Earth. Unlike other popular languages seen in fiction with Klingon being the most famous one, the Na'vi language is the most realistic fictional language ever created. With most movies the "alien" language created is limited to only what is necessary for the script and the language doesn't exist other than what you hear or see on screen. In most cases the languages heard in movies never take off or gain any real popularity, but that's not the case with Avatar. The Na'vi and their language is beautiful and people want to learn about them, their language, and their culture even though none of it is real. Billions of people watch "reality TV" even though that's not real...

This Forum - to your family this is just the internet. You talking to people on this forum may seem ridiculous to them because this is just a movie, but people from this forum have actually met and there are more clan meetups scheduled for the years to come. This is real...

    [top]Fans have lives

Get a life? Ask your sister to define that... exactly what is a life?

To one person working on cars is a life while to someone else going to concerts is a life. I like to stay home... and my sisters believe I have no life.

The people here have lives. We have our private lives and professional lives just like anyone else. We also have people from all walks of life here.

Our oldest member is in her 70's and our youngest member was 10 I believe. We have people from all around the world connecting here and making real friendships.

    [top]Me

I'm 28 years old from Texas... I own my own business working on computers and I'm also a fan of Avatar.

What people think of me for it doesn't matter because Avatar makes me happy.

    [top]Conclusion

Absolutely nothing is going to discourage me from being a fan. You're a fan of Avatar, which was the highest grossing movie of all time and you're a part of something... sometimes your family and friends can become jealous because you have something special and they do not. There's nothing much that can be done about that so you should do what you enjoy and try your best to not allow the negative remarks of others bring you down.

The Na'vi are very beautiful creatures and I am very much in love with Neytiri as are many of the guys here and while some people in the world may not see it as "normal" I really couldn't care less because I love Neytiri... not to forget to mention the fact that she's sexy as hell.

You may be by yourself or out numbered, but you're not alone!

my parents and friends first thought i was a bit weird since i love Avatar. i didn't get emotional or angry whenever they questioned my love for it. i just gave them an honest answer, remaining calm and not trying to hide anything. they couldnt say much in return and eventually they stopped questioning me about it :D

Na'vi is a very beautiful dialect, and music to my ears. Thing is, everyone has their own taste. If she feels you're wasting time learning something you feel passionate about, my advice is to say to her that berating people, like she did to you, proves she needs to work on her manners and appreciation skills. And when she gives you that shocked O face walk away.

Ayn'at Alyara... Wow, I See you... Really, I can't tell you how lovely it was to read this... I was sad for you ofcourse, but in a way happy, to read your words, with such honesty, when I feel 'realness', and feeling and pain in someone's words, it really shakes me... I very much admire you for standing up for what you believed, and all I can tell you is, I felt like you so many times in life... In a way I get lonely sometimes yes... But there's always a pet to confort you , and yeah, this Forum, it helped so many times, believe me, don't ever let anyone discourage you to come here to find company, this is probably the best place on the internet to find true people So, you'll always have 'a shoulder to cry on' here if you need to, at least mine lol I think that the moment you're going through is really, Special, you're discovering things in your life that maybe you hadn't noticed before, or maybe you did, but some things in Avatar evoked other things inside you that we're 'dormient', and maybe realizing you're actually 'different', in the Good way ofcourse, the Best way in my opinion You're standing up for your passion, and you know what you believe is something more pure and creative and just, Nice, whatever. I know It's hard to cope with putting these new feelings and ideas, maybe with your family, which you do Love, well I wish you to best for that to 'Mellow' out, ma Tsmuké, Eywa Ngahu,

Stay up in the Clouds From up there, You got the view of the real Big Picture, and that's where you Learned to See, good luck

Intresting fact for people that dont relate to Avatar and my way of convaying the film to others , who see the Na'Vi as you describe, I show them not what "Avatar is" but what "Avatar has realy Done" in our "real" world. (with honest proof proof to back it all up) when people come to truly understand Avatar and its connections and understand that James Cameron created a mirror story example and that fantasy issues in the film are driven by quite real world examples we see on the news every night, they will do one of 2 things "try and deny this fact" or question there view on the film, as a person who went through quite a trial by fire after
seeing Avatar I had a lot of questions, in doing research on the film and its connections to very real underlying cultural examples and spirtuality I have nothing but respect for all who worked on the film I will give anyone A hint who experenced sadness after seeing the film , that Avatar is very unique in stoytelling , it is a simple fact " It comes down to this statement "At the intellectual level, "We’re in denial" about the state of the planet"But at the subconscious level, "We all know the truth" !!!. I will include 2 links to real world avatar examples the first is Native review in avatar from the amazon it contains a big key on understaning avaters real cultural spiritual roots(if intrested). Avatar in the Amazon - YouTube
The second link is from equador and is about the issues the people there face , Avatar gave many of those people there voice back , and has raised huge awareness of what they are realy going through in the eyes of the world. this example shows just how closely avatars cultural/spirital connections "mirror" real native peoples on earth (symbolicly)
02 Ecuador - Na'vi of the Amazon, Avatar happens in Ecuador - YouTube
I would be glad to try and help anyone intrested in learning about Avatars connections but be aware everyone sees the film from there own perspective.

awww that's really nice for you to say, and yes I do feel different and Avatar has opened up some strange door that I don't want to ever close. Sense forever there were things I wanted to do: Lose weight, eat better, I was already conscience of nature but now I'm even more so, for whatever reason Avatar has made me honestly want to do these things...it's great really and I even told her it's made me really want to change and she just says. "If it took a MOVIE to make you want to change...well that' sad. I just ignored her though. irayo for your kind words ma tsmuke!
