A Hell's Gate on earth

Its about the Oyu Tolgoi gold and copper mine in Mongolia. Doesn't the main picture just scream Hell's Gate if you swapped the horizon

There are concerns about the environmental impact of the mime on the local environment it is hardly hitting the headlines of major western environmental sites. A cynical mind might suggest that this is beacuse while its easy to raise anger over the destruction of the amazon rainforest, it is hard to raise support against environmental damage in the Gobi Desert which consisting mainly of grass is hardly photogenic

we are still doing that in America too,sadly. in West Virginia,they dynamite the entire tops off of 10,000 year old mountains,to get at the coal shale.




we are still using fossil fuels. how stupid is that?!

A similar thing is happening in the Pilbara, in Western Australia -a vast desert region being plundered for mineral resources by various countries. There's a huge mine called the Super Pit, the largest open cut gold mine there and a huge scar on the landscape - looks like the one on Pandora was modeled on it.

man,those god-awful pit-scars look like the ones on Pandora,only worse. the Pandora ones were only about 20 years old,or thereabouts. the earth quarries and mine-pits are much older,and more severely cut into the land. no wonder Mother Gaia is so frail...

One of my fav places to fish is an old mining pit called Sucker Flats, its soon to be filled in for whatever reason, the pit takes up about 20 acres, its really beautiful down there.


This is a bridge at the top of Sucker Flats



Down next to the pit, which is really quite beautiful these days.



A short ride on my 4 wheeler takes me to a place like this, large piles of chat, that is much like white sand, its intermingled with woods and steep hills, great for people with jeeps or 4 wheelers...much of it has been taken away over the years, but there is still quite a bit left to ride on.
