Barefoot is the way to go... it's how we were meant to walk. Just enough covering to prevent cuts would be ideal. I'm getting me a pair of Vibram Five Fingers.

Vibram Fivefingers are the only way to go. I have a pair of classics and just ordered some KSO's... I live in them!

Yeah, naturally the ground is alot softer than man made things such as concrete or whatever the floors are in your house. Its nice being able to walk on the grass and have some give to it.

Stepping back for a minute, if you really do feel pain walking on hard surfaces I would get that checked out by a doctor.

I have nike frees, which are a middle ground between barefoot and shoe. They let the foot flex the way its supposed to, and I heard Vibram FiveFingers is a bit better in mimicking barefoot. However, in my experience (as a runner who sometimes logs 70 miles a week), I reccomend au natural. If you're looking for that barefoot feel, then go, hmmm, barefoot? Sure, the shoes keep cuts away, but believe it or not, people all over the world don't have shoes, and they are fine. I read an article one time about a man who only runs barefoot, and how his feet slowly became tougher, stronger and less prone to cuts. He said with walking like that everyday, his foot naturally lands on things to avoid cuts. He can run over a shard of glass, and won't cut his foot at all. And this guys is no super-athlete, just an everyday jogger minus shoes. Personally, I reccommend barefoot and if you really have to, go with one of those shoes mentioned. They're good if you have to leave the house.
