In my area there wasn't really any hype or anything. In fact, the trailers didn't play that much. People say there was a lot of hype over Avatar because everyone knew about it so much in advance before it came out and that's why people were so critical of it, but I didn't see any trailers until just days before it was in theaters and they may have played the trailer 20 times on my local station. This movie literally came from no where from my perspective. Nothing about it then *BOOM* AVATAR! IN THEATERS NEXT WEEK!. I've watched the trailers on the Blu-ray and I realize that in my area we didn't even see the full trailers. Basically what I saw was a couple of frames of Pandora, Jake in his Avatar running and jumping into the river, Neytiri turning and looking from around the tree and a few battle scenes and that's all they showed it was like a five second clip. I really didn't know much about the movie and in all honesty I probably would have gone years without ever seeing it if not for my sister bringing the movie on DVD. My reaction to the trailers when I saw Neytiri was just... damn. I remember thinking they modeled the character after Beyonce or something because Neytiri had that beautiful black girl thing going on. I definitely was attracted to Neytiri, but the trailers I saw didn't intrigue me enough to want to go see it. I'm not really a go to the cinema type of guy anyways.
I probably will never see it in the cinema because I live in a small town so on the weekends parents just throw their children out to go see movies. When I went to see the Pirates of the Caribbean films there was standing room only. WHAT?! They shouldn't sell tickets when they run out of seats! There were children as young as seven that had to stand in the main isles. Sometimes the crowd is so loud you can't even hear the movie and they'll stop the movie. So I would never be able to fully enjoy Avatar in an environment like that. I'd have to travel like almost an hour away to see it in our closest I-MAX. Our I-MAX is different apparently because you must have an appointment to see whatever movie is playing. It's really worth going to our I-MAX because it's connected to a science museum (hence the reason why you must have an appointment) and usually the movies they play there are science related. On the entrance of the I-MAX they have a miniature tornado display that you can actually put your hand in.
I saw Avatar on DVD the last weekend in June... I signed up for Avatar-Forums 6/30/2010 just three to four days after seeing it.
I hung around Avatar-Forums talking about the movie for months after only actually seeing it once. I didn't get to see it again until the Avatar Collector's Edition Blu-ray arrived. I pre-ordered it and it arrived November 16, 2010 just seven days after my birthday in which I had bought myself a nice Blu-ray player specifically to watch Avatar. I didn't have to do any firmware updates or anything (luckily because I had no way of updating it at the time). I had a Blu-ray player for about a week before I even had a Blu-ray disc. I could have watched a DVD like the Matrix or something, but I was wating for Avatar.
The directors cut is definitely the best version. I've only watched the original once and the rest of the time I've only seen the directors cut. I tried watching the original one night and I had to stop it and switch to the directors cut because it felt so cut up. There's just too much missing from the original and I hope James Cameron took note of that. We wouldn't mind having a 5 hour version to see it in a completed form... Sure there are people who only like 90 minute films, but should we continue to allow simpletons to dictate what the market can release? Five hours is a good running time for an awesome movie. The only people who would complain about it being that long are people who aren't even fans and haven't seen it in the first place.
Although I've watched Avatar less than 20 times it was the most epic movie I've seen yet.
This is the first thing I've ever wanted to follow and be a dedicated fan of.
It completely changed my life.
