Fanatacism isn't the same as hope.
If I was a fanatic then I would be forcing you to agree with me on the same course of action instead of spurring you to simply try imporve the world in whatever way you can.
the only way i can see to helping the world improve,is by hurting or helping bring down the corporations, and i am doing a little of that right now. i am no longer buying any goods or services from the 200 companies on that SOPA/PIPA/ACTA list,as the internet is really the only tool that will bring us out of the morass of fundamentalist ideologues, uneducated arab kids who blindly strap on explosives,social-status worshipers,consumer-junkies,power-mad congress buffoons, and all this crazy money-obsessed lunacy. the old fossils want to control this instrument of human enlightenment, and i can't have that...

I'll say this one more time I guess.
It is a harsh species which destroys it's environment in 100 years. Not everyone sees space as the direction of progress.
And before you say quit complaining and do something. We do. I'm working on that engineering thing, and keeping that 4.0. I just ultimately think it's a waste of my time because it won't do anything. But I'm still doing it. I also plan to give all my extra meals to the homeless people at the end of the quarter. But that doesn't give them a home.
I don't see the world fixed until we are living below in groups below Dunbar's Number. That's just my idea. I know not everyone wants that, but we who do still play the game and do stuff. We just don't think what we do does sh*t in the long run.
"A man lies in his bed in a room with no door.
He waits hoping for a presence, something, anything, to enter.
After spending half his life searching he still felt as blank as the ceiling at which he's staring.
He's alive but feels absolutely nothing. So is he?
When he was six he believed that the moon overhead followed him, by nine he had deciphered the illusion trading magic for fact.
No tradebacks.
So this is what it's like to be an adult.
If he only knew now what he knew then...
Lying sideways atop crumpled sheets and no covers he decides to dream.
Dream up a new self for himself."
"Pardon me, I wana live in a fantasy."

The problem with "get off your a$$ and do something about it" is that you must change public perception first and that doesn't happen over night. Look at racism or the views of alternative sexuality and you'll see that doing something isn't always enough especially if your audience isn't willing to listen or accept a new way of thinking.
Different races and homosexuality have existed since time, but they're still not accepted so changing how people think is quite a difficult task.
Look at the occupy movement... do you think it has changed anything? Do you think politicians are losing sleep over any of this? Large groups of jobless poor people take to the streets to protest for what they feel is injustice and yesterday Mit Romney said; "I’m not concerned about the very poor." We aren't getting through to them because politicians do not live in the same world we live in. They can get on a private jet and go anywhere in the world, eat thick steaks that cost $50k, and live in $500,000 - $5,000,000 homes. These people are completely detached from reality.
Mit Romney earned $42,000,000 over the past two years. I haven't met anyone who earns more than $30,000 per year. My father and I combined bring in less than $20,000 per year. I'm quite limited in what I can actually DO because in our world money is required for every little thing we do and when you don't have any money you really can't do anything. Think about it... I'm so strapped for cash I can't even donate $5 to this forum... much less change the world.
The ones halting our progress towards space exploration/colonization are governments and others who wish to gain profits. Imagine a starship like the Enterprise with thousands on board and imagine millions of these ships traveling to various locations millions of light years out into space. Sounds great to me, but for a government entity it sounds like you couldn't CONTROL people that far away. That is why we will never get off of this planet. The government can leech off of us while where here in our cages, but once we are allowed to leave Earth they lose their power. People leaving Earth is a potential loss in profits. In fact, to get the idea of going to space out of our minds (in other words to teach us to not want to go to space) just to get a seat on a space tourist vehicle for a 20 minute flight in the EDGE of space you'll have to pay $200,000 or more. The space tourist program should be up and going in the next few years, but I've never met anyone in my life who would be able to ride in one.
We're depleting our resources and ability to get off of the planet while making it ridiculously expensive to go into space, which is an example of the most counter productive act in human history. One day the sun will die and anything and everything in our solar system will die with it. All of this progress you speak of means absolutely nothing unless we achieve some sort of decent space flight technology that could get us to another planet like Earth.
If the modern world leads to absolutely nothing I'd rather live as the Na'vi do... it would be less stressful.
I plan to, but there are age requirements that restrict me from obtaining the office I'd run for and I would do a complete overhaul of the system. The first thing to go would be congress. WE THE PEOPLE should be the ones voting and representing ourselves. People are often compelled to do nothing because they feel powerless and this would change if the power was shifted away from the government and back to the people.
^ i would vote for you,Enigma, and not because i am biased towards you as a fellow fan of Avatar and a friend (well, maybe a little, lol),but because i have read some genuinely good ideas, suggestions, and common sense from your commentary and well-researched posts. you got my vote!!! hell yeahhh!!!!
