I was REALLY SURPRISED that (during their smooch at the TREE OF SOULS) Jake-Omaticaya didn't move in to kiss Neytiri and stop, just before doing so, to say something humanly obvious like, "You smell great!"

THEN plunged in for the big one.

That inclusion of heightened Na'Vi senses would have opened up the experience for the audience, imho.

I 'suspect' in such a heightened state of 'mating readiness' Neytiri would have smelled ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! in a way that's so difficult for humans to appreciate; she'd be GOING OFF LIKE A PHEROMONE FIREWORK DISPLAY.

It was SO WORTH Sully mentioning the CHAAANGE in her scent! He should have been UNABLE to stop himself!

“You smell great” or “You look beautiful tonight” money and diamond rings or other things that you see with human relationships were avoided to show a lack of materialism since human relationships are very materialistic. If anything like that had been added it would have taken away from the moment and would have ruined the movie. “I love you” is another part of human relationships removed from the equation and its more versatile replacement “I see you” comes off much better because it feels like a more honest way of expressing your feelings. The fact that this is our first look at a relationship that does not require these elements is what makes this love story work so well. This is the best love story I’ve ever seen. There’s more realism with this love story than usually seen in typical Hollywood love stories. You actually see that these two characters feel something for one another and you really get the sense that there could be a loss. You get the feeling that there’s actually something to lose here because this is something unique and special. It doesn’t feel like they’re acting or forcing false emotion. When Neytiri goes off on Jake for hiding his mission you see genuine emotional pain and you feel it too. You also feel fear because at that point the relationship could suddenly end and it does very quickly and painfully. That scene is a very emotional moment and to add to what you’re already feeling the next sequence being the destruction of Hometree sets you on an emotional rollercoaster. The point is had materialism been included the emotional impact wouldn’t have been as big.

Materialism of any sort ruins the idea of unconditional love…

For example; the first girl I ever tried to go out with refused to date me unless I would buy her a ring at least 1 karat and it needed to cost at least $2,000 and I had two weeks to get it before she would even consider being my girlfriend. In a situation like that true love cannot exist and it dilutes the emotional connection. The fact that it isn’t like that with Neytiri is one of the many reasons why she’s so appealing. At least that’s how it is for me.
