Default Quaritch: the right man for the job?

While James Cameron does a good job of making Quaritch the bad guy, I have wondered if his skills were perfect for Pandora.

Remember that RDA was operating with extremely limited resources with only minor reinforcements (remember the ISA was only replacing personnel, the only way to increase personnel is to increase the fleet servicing Pandora). This means that whatever the SpecOp commanders' do their priority is to do it with as few causalities as possible. Quaritch's 'shoot it to hell' strategy obviously would acheive this even at increased native cost. His counter strike/punishments would also help provide disencouragement for native attacks on the miners if making relationships overall worse.

Unfortunately such skills/qualities would quickly become a double-edged sword. While such tactics would have been fine in a purely defensive role (RDA staying in thier bases/dig sites), once they became expansionary Quaritch's tactics would simplely push the natives over the edge and into war (which is what happened).

On a side note is Quaritch's name ever said in the movie?, the first time I heard it was in the game.

I can think of a couple times off the top of my head. "Give it up, Quaritch, its over." Jake said, hopping down infront of the shack(final confrontation).

"Quaritch is rolling..." Max on the video monitor talking to Jake, Trudy, and Norm prior to the attack on the Tree of Souls.

In my opinion, Quaritch was a very good man for the job. From his behavior and a deleted lines in the script "Besides I can't leave. This is my war here." I think he was in duty for a long time. He was probably one of the most ancient personnel of Hell's Gate. In all his years as Head of Security, the base has been kept away from major incident. He took his job to heart and wanted things to be done well. He didn't hesitate to do things himself if he thought it was important.

The attack on the Tree of Souls was a (sic) normal tactical movement in this case or at least not completely stupid. And don't forget that he would have succeeded if it wasn't for Eywa. For in the end, it was Eywa and not the Na'vi that defeated him, something he couldn't predict. True, even without Eywa, the casualties would have been heavy, but his plan would have probably worked: without the Tree of Souls, the Na'vi would have been demoralized and scared.

Now, Quaritch was probably a little too enthusiastic and trigger-happy, and he derailed completely in the end (taking over Selfridge and Hell's Gate), but finally, he did his job: to ensure the safety of Hell's Gate. And he died doing it, failing in his mission at the same time...

I myself thought Quaritch was the excellent choice for the film. Agreeing with the poster above me. He has the perfect attitude to being a leader. His quote 'nothings over while i'm breathing' springs to mind. He has the perfect attitude. And looks like what a Head of Security should look like. A tough, no-**** taking guy. He got down to business in my opinion. He's being paid to do the job he is told to do, he doesn't care at all for Pandora, or the deep connection between the tree's and the Tree of Souls. As long as he completes his goal and stays in Selfridges good books that's all that he cares about.

He'd fire at will, Na'vi in the way or no Na'vi in the way. Personally I liked him for the job.

Out of interest, doesn't anyone know if he played the roll as leader in the film 'Small Soldiers'? He looks exactly like the leader of the evil force from that film, haha.
