Jake Sully arrives on Pandora to drive his brothers Avatar only to be rebuffed by the Science Team Manager, Dr Augustine. There was so much love during that first meeting. He would have spent his tour of duty playing a secondary subordinate role before being sent back Earth side. That would have made a pretty boring story. Jake’s fortunes change with the help received by two characters in the movie: Miles Quaritch, the RDA head of security, and Eywa, the unseen entity on Pandora.
Quaritch clandestinely turns Jake from being part of the Science Team to becoming an operative for the SecOps. He comes on board with the prospect of getting the use of his legs again. What is Grace offering? Under the guise of being the companion Avatar driver to Dr Norm Spellman, Jake is to embed with the Na’vi (HUMINT) to provide Intel that Quaritch says is “to find out how I can force their cooperation, or hit ‘em hard if they don’t.”
Eywa is an extraterrestrial being whose body is being attacked by outside parasites. Unable to fight off the infection with her “white corpuscles”, she finds some “medicine” that could help fight the spread of the disease. She helps Jake during first contact providing him the opportunity to use his initiative to become Quaritch’s double agent. Little do we realize that Eywa is covertly and subtly recruiting the spy and turning Jake’s allegiance against Quartich. There is no better tool in counterespionage than a pretty woman. A double-double agent. Flawless!
It is almost like a John le Carré spy thriller except in SciFi. Is JC stealing a little from JC?
