    Default Jake, the Double-Double Agent

Jake Sully arrives on Pandora to drive his brothers Avatar only to be rebuffed by the Science Team Manager, Dr Augustine. There was so much love during that first meeting. He would have spent his tour of duty playing a secondary subordinate role before being sent back Earth side. That would have made a pretty boring story. Jake’s fortunes change with the help received by two characters in the movie: Miles Quaritch, the RDA head of security, and Eywa, the unseen entity on Pandora.

Quaritch clandestinely turns Jake from being part of the Science Team to becoming an operative for the SecOps. He comes on board with the prospect of getting the use of his legs again. What is Grace offering? Under the guise of being the companion Avatar driver to Dr Norm Spellman, Jake is to embed with the Na’vi (HUMINT) to provide Intel that Quaritch says is “to find out how I can force their cooperation, or hit ‘em hard if they don’t.”

Eywa is an extraterrestrial being whose body is being attacked by outside parasites. Unable to fight off the infection with her “white corpuscles”, she finds some “medicine” that could help fight the spread of the disease. She helps Jake during first contact providing him the opportunity to use his initiative to become Quaritch’s double agent. Little do we realize that Eywa is covertly and subtly recruiting the spy and turning Jake’s allegiance against Quartich. There is no better tool in counterespionage than a pretty woman. A double-double agent. Flawless!

It is almost like a John le Carré spy thriller except in SciFi. Is JC stealing a little from JC?

yes, but if this was a real John le Carré book everyone would be doublecrossing everyone else and getting depressed.
    • Quaritch and Eywa would be willing to drop Jake the moment their problems are solved.
    • Grace would be using Jake's time with the Na'vi to further her own works for prestige and money
    • And Norm would be a repressed homosexual because the na'vi don't seem to have gay people (atleast yet)
Then they all get killed as they try to escape from Hell's gate. (as you can see Le Carré works can be quite cynical)

I don't believe Eywa was powerless to fight off the infection of humans-even an alien lifeform is life, and life is something Eywa understands and appreciates. My gut tells me people like Grace showed Eywa the side of humanity that is beautiful and easy to love. My gut also tells me Eywa knew what kind of soul Jake Sully possessed and initiated a meeting with the Omaticaya by chasing him with a Thanator. She also put Neytiri directly in his path. She wanted the Omaticaya to like Jake, she wanted Neytiri to like Jake. She wanted to bring these two peoples together. My gut tells me she wanted a peaceful solution, because war is for fools and Eywa is no fool. When at last given no other choice she struck, and struck hard. My gut tells me Eywa didn't enjoy killing men.
