Default Does anyone feel sorry for Tsu'tey?

Not sure if this has been covered before, but having seen Avatar more times than I might admit to, I've really got to see the character 'arcs' through the story, such as Jake's, Neytiri's, Grace's, etc. But the one who leave's me feeling sorry for is Tsu'tey.

You see there he is fulfilling his role to protect his people from the Skypeople and Dreamwalkers, knowing that one day he will become clan leader, when Neytiri brings one of them home. Understandably distrusting of Jake, he wants to see the back of him. Over time Jake manages to meet the challenges given to him and slowly Tsu'tey begins to accept him as one of the clan.

Next thing he knows Jake and Neytiri are kind of an 'item' and the Na'vi girl that Tsu'tey was meant to be mated to was taken away from him. You can then understand his reactions to take the war to the Skypeople... until Jake floors him in front of his clan. As Jake gets pulled back to his human body, Tsu'tey sees his opportunity, but is stopped by Neytiri - again in front of the clan.

When Jake comes back to admit he knew Hometree was going to be destroyed, Tsu'tey's suspicions appeared to be proven right. And so at last the seeming traitor, 'Jakesulley', is bound up. Eytukan then sends Tsu'tey to 'attack from above', but Hometree is destroyed before Tsu'tey and his follows have a chance to do anything....

The next time we see 'Tsu'tey he has had to assume to position of clan leader at a time when there is a great weight on his shoulders following what has happened. At this point Jake flies in as Toruk Macto! What does Tsu'tey do? Well, he is Na'vi enough to accept Jake and ride with him: no anger, no jealousy, no hatred - these are Skypeople traits. Instead Tsu'tey respects what Jake is doing for them. He understands what is happening and what Jake is trying to do.

Tsu'tey gives his all to defending is clan and all Na'vi under the leadership of Jake. The last scene in the film where we see Tsu'tey (although not the original script) is of him trying to stop the Skypeople destroy his home land with all his might...only to be shot and go crashing to the ground where he goes to be with Eywa. Poor chap. It just makes me rather sad when we see him fall out of the back of the shuttle...

Is it me, or does anyone else feel sorry for the guy?

At first I didn't care much for Tsu'Tey! He seemed to be so full of anger and hatred. And he didn't like Jake... so that was one more reason to not like him!

Though I learned from the forum that some thought that Tsu'Tey was supposed to be mated with Sylwani (Neytiris older sister that got killed by the RDA many years before Jake got to Pandora). So he was then forced to be mated with Neytiri, who he has just loved as a sister and never had any strong feelings for. He was then devastated! Both from that the love of his life got killed by the enemy of his life and that he had to be mated with Neytiri! He then lived with hatred, pain and disgust, more than he had ever felt, for the RDA!
And then Jake comes in, as you described and just ****ed up everything!

But a thing that you didn't mention that made me feel even more sad for Tsu'Tey, is how he really died.

Cause Tsu'Tey did survive the fall from the Valkyrie after being shot! Even though he was close to death, it just wasen't enough! Then Wainfleer had to come in with his AMP and cut off his queue!!! Tsu'Tey was then after the battle discovered by the Na'vi with no queue! They then brought Jake to him.
Tsu'Tey pleaded for Jake to kill him! He did...

That part was cut away from the movie, but will probably be in the extra edition dvd that comes out this fall!

But if you just take your time to look past the person who he appears to be in the movie, to what has made him like that person!

So to answer your question, YES! I did feel sorry for him! Though it took a while to realize it.

LOVEavatar, you have just about summed it up for me also.
The only thing I could add at the moment would be the way Tsu'tey did try to come to understand Jake at that clan celebration, until his anger got to him when Neytiri came over and scooped up Jake in front of him, and at the end when he says to Jake before he died that he was honoured to fly with "ma tsmukan Toruk Makto" (all in script). Tsu'tey always did what was right by the clan rules, he also took Jake up to get his Ikran and still had Neytiri rub his face in her and Jake's blossoming romance, even when they were flying back together (not intentionally).
Tsu'tey may have not liked it but he handled it with maturity for the benift of the clan, until they (jake and Neytiri) broke the clan rules by mating (as neytiri was to be with Tsu'tey) and even then he was acting in relation to the rules of the clan.

At first I didn't really like Tsu'tey as a character but now after a few months I have come to really respect this character. Tsu'tey even thought of his clan first when he succumbed to Jake as toruk Makto and placed his clan into Jake's hands, a less noble Na'vi in Tsu'tey's position could have drastically undermined and altered the events of the movie.

Yes I feel very sorry for Tsu'tey because he did not have one thing go right for him after Silwanin's death, yet he acted forthright and with honour even during things beyond his imagination that could occur, right up to his death. It is easy to see why he was chosen to inherit the clan as their leader.

Also just as a side note, I have three Avatar small figurines set up near some of my books,I have Jake and Neytiri sort of together then a tiny replica of an ancient Roman sword and Roman helmet, then I have Tsu'tey's figurine standing after that.
Just laughing in the way that Tsu'tey can't even get a break there either LOL

I got to like Tsu'Tey as the film progressed and didn't think he needed to die.

I don't feel sorry for him, but I am sad at how his life has played out. He is clearly a great warrior with the Omaticaya's best wishes at heart, and I was sad when he died in battle :(.
