Not sure if this has been covered before, but having seen Avatar more times than I might admit to, I've really got to see the character 'arcs' through the story, such as Jake's, Neytiri's, Grace's, etc. But the one who leave's me feeling sorry for is Tsu'tey.
You see there he is fulfilling his role to protect his people from the Skypeople and Dreamwalkers, knowing that one day he will become clan leader, when Neytiri brings one of them home. Understandably distrusting of Jake, he wants to see the back of him. Over time Jake manages to meet the challenges given to him and slowly Tsu'tey begins to accept him as one of the clan.
Next thing he knows Jake and Neytiri are kind of an 'item' and the Na'vi girl that Tsu'tey was meant to be mated to was taken away from him. You can then understand his reactions to take the war to the Skypeople... until Jake floors him in front of his clan. As Jake gets pulled back to his human body, Tsu'tey sees his opportunity, but is stopped by Neytiri - again in front of the clan.
When Jake comes back to admit he knew Hometree was going to be destroyed, Tsu'tey's suspicions appeared to be proven right. And so at last the seeming traitor, 'Jakesulley', is bound up. Eytukan then sends Tsu'tey to 'attack from above', but Hometree is destroyed before Tsu'tey and his follows have a chance to do anything....
The next time we see 'Tsu'tey he has had to assume to position of clan leader at a time when there is a great weight on his shoulders following what has happened. At this point Jake flies in as Toruk Macto! What does Tsu'tey do? Well, he is Na'vi enough to accept Jake and ride with him: no anger, no jealousy, no hatred - these are Skypeople traits. Instead Tsu'tey respects what Jake is doing for them. He understands what is happening and what Jake is trying to do.
Tsu'tey gives his all to defending is clan and all Na'vi under the leadership of Jake. The last scene in the film where we see Tsu'tey (although not the original script) is of him trying to stop the Skypeople destroy his home land with all his might...only to be shot and go crashing to the ground where he goes to be with Eywa. Poor chap. It just makes me rather sad when we see him fall out of the back of the shuttle...
Is it me, or does anyone else feel sorry for the guy?
Alan
