Thanks so much for your post, Jeffro Jones. You seem to get it! I like grittier sci-fi and I’m hoping JC doesn’t get too…well, comic-bookish with his Avatar prequels/sequels. I really would like to see it involve Earth in one of the sequels. There are ways to make it 75-80% Pandora and 20-25% Earth. The RDA/Selfridge angle needs to be resolved, too. In my mind, the inhabitants of Pandora really can’t ignore Earth anymore. I believe that it was destiny the two species paths crossed and the end result doesn’t and shouldn’t be bad. The dynamics of Jake being human and now permanently inside a Na’vi body has some interesting angles to it as well.
While there are a lot of people on this forum who would not like Earth involved, I think that Pandora has a lot of lessons for humans. The idea that Earth is dying and people aren’t doing anything about it just isn’t believable to me. I just don’t think there would be a Grace, a Jake, a Trudy, a Norm, etc. I understand the set up for Jake, so that he readily falls in love with Pandora. But the fact that he was paraplegic was enough in my mind for him to want to leave his earthly body for his avatar. So I’m hoping that there’s a broader storyline and yes, a happier ending for Earth in his trilogy. But, of course, I want it balanced nicely with more Pandora!
I guess that’s why I’m writing my own thoughts down. My story includes a “tour” of Pandora through Jake and Neytiri. Jake has to visit the other clans on Pandora as part of his elevation to clan leader. This is occurring side by side with the story of Nora, another scientist character, Norm and Max at the lab having to deal with the virus as well as the capture of some of the Na’vi by the RDA. That, and the health of Jake is what gets everyone in my storyline to meet up. How I can get it all to mesh together...well, still in the works! But maybe I’ll post some of it here eventually.
No matter what, though, I'm looking forward to whatever JC does with his story.
