I'm guessing there were wars, which might explain why the clans are all isolated, but have knowledge of each other. What about clan rivalry and alliances?
The idea I ahve (and Am using in my fic) is that the ToGS was the event that brought down the advanced Na'vi civilization, mass starvation and death ensued, polities broke down into smaller and smaller units (ending with the progenitors of the modern clans), and theat the Toruk Makto had to bring an end to the chaos and herald in peaceful co-existance under the watch of a living goddess (Ey'wa, whether naturally occuring or created by advanced science).

But as to the disaster: Aliens glassing the planet? Radiation storms affecting technology? Were there refugees that went to other planets with their technology? Are there ruins on Pandora itself?

It's difficult to say. Cities much like we have on Earth say, after about 10k years would probably look nothing at all like they do now. that said however, there would be remnants at least of some of it. possibly buried?

From a purely Earth Standpoint. things such as buildings would definitely crumble down, cars would probably rust and corrode away. but things such as re-enforced metals, plastics and even bones would still be around to find.

On Pandora, the dense jungle way have simply carpeted the ruins and with such dense vegetation over 10k years they would become buried.

But...there would still be things to be found, tools, metals, alloys and if spaceships were involved. then the level of technology would mean parts of Pandora are high in radiation still even after 10k years.

But it would be an awesome idea if they put that into the second movie!!

It would be interesting. I guess we will see. Perhaps there's an "Atlantis" type city in the second, that is trapped underwater, or something. But them building over the land seems like something they would be against, like someone else already said.
Pandora is great. But I live somewhere better. A place created with words, not computers. I believe in a real God, and see a blue and green world everyday- not a grey one. I like to think the best of me, and realize the glass is half-full. I have a life, a name, not a pen-name.

Avatar is for watching, and life is for living- not the other way around.

I would think that, near the zenith of the Civilization (as in shortly before the aliens found them and glassed Panodra's surface or whatever happened), they were building bridge-cities between rock-outcroppings and mountains (like Cato Nemoidia, ROTS and Force Unleashed 2), underwater ocean arcologies, space colonies and other places. I also think that around this time they were busy creating the present environment, including the plug-and-play animals and the Eywa Tree-Brain (either created or upgraded from a natural system). My theory is that after their infrastructure and civ flatlined, primativists gained control of the land and the techies retreated into space or under the ocean.
