The same could be said for Norm's avatar; did it really die, or did Norm just get kicked out of it when he got shot due to the intense pain? We don't have enough information here and although optimism is nice, I don't think that either of the Avatars made it. I don't really want Grace to come back......she was a cool character, but she's dead. I suppose I would be okay with her Avatar coming back and her being transplanted back into it, but then that begs the question of whether or not "Eywa" can do that. "Eywa" is just a name for something the Na'vi do not fully understand; a giant network of what amount to intelligent trees that safeguard the planet and keep away harmful invaders. They can also carry biological conciousnesses like computer servers manage binary code. The question remains, though, whether they can dispense it to whomever asks for it.

However, I do remember it saying somewhere that the sequel will take place several years after the first one. If I've read everything correctly, this might be enough time to make new avatars for the "good" humans who don't have one.
Theres no obvious reason for Grace's avatar to be dead, Jake and Norm's avatars were alive before they linked with them and after the link ceases they continue to remain alive, although unconscious. Just because there is no-one to link to Grace's avatar doesn't mean it will die. They're maintained physically when they're not in use, somehow or other. Possibly intravenously, who knows. So unless Grace's avatar is physically killed, or left to die, theres no reason why it should die.

Norm's avatar... well it looks like it's dead. Even if it was wounded there could have been time for it to recover possibly before we see the RDA leave. The fact that we see Norm in an Exopack mask at the departure suggests it's dead. It's not certain, but it seems likely.

I agree with you about Norm's avatar. It is more than likely that the injuries his avatar suffered were not in and of themselves fatal. However, it is also quite likely that either he was unable to get to the avatar in time to stop the bleeding and/or there was too much going on in the aftermath of the battle for his avatar to be healed up at Hell's Gate.

(I am guessing it would have been a little while before the Na'vi would have been able to capture Hell's Gate too)

I disagree with the idea the Grace's avatar would still be alive, for two reasons.

    1) her avatar has to eat in order to remain alive, even if it is in "standby" mode after her human body is dead, her avatar still has to eat. It is in the functional equivalent of a coma, and without some kind of food to keep it alive, it will die eventually. For obvious reasons, the Na'vi don't have IV tubes and there are probably no such facilities in the remote link shack. That means her avatar dies, which leads me to my second point ...

    2) why would Jake and/or the Na'vi even bother to keep her avatar alive in the first place? I mean, her human body is dead. Dead. Dead. They will bury it out of respect for her, but why in the name of their Great Mother would they keep her avatar alive, even if they had the means to so?

The simplest explanation is that they buried both her avatar and her human body because that would be the quickest thing to do. They had a war to prepare for, remember.
Here's my Avatar fan fiction. Give it a read, if you're so inclined.
