The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, the premier international football tournament. It is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations. This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. This decision left the Oceania Football Confederation as the only confederation yet to host the FIFA World Cup. Italy are the defending champions. The draw for the finals took place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town.

Well let's do a little dreaming here...I think the USA can win this World Cup. This past year has shown that this team is much improved from their '06 showing. Now granted, last year's matches are last year's matches..but I'm seeing some hope for them this year. Don't stop believin'!

Respectable but quite a boring team. Rooney is the best player in the world but the rest of the English players are pretty average. I think Spain have to be favourites with their squad and reigning champs. The Germans have a tendancy to rock up and get pretty far. Portugal are like England basically relying on Ronaldo (one man team) Brazilians and Argentinians have tons of experience but if I had to bet i'd go Spain.

Hey now! Just remember what happened the last time we played England in the World Cup. :ndevil:

Now I'm just giving you a hard time there. What happened in 1950 is hardly relevant now. Those teams are gone. That Cup is over and many have been played out and concluded since. It's a whole new tournament coming up. Now I understand well that this isn't my country's most pouplar game, nor is it the second, third or even fourth. Luckily there's a team representing this country that doesn't quite care about that statistic or how their predecessors may have performed 4, 12 or 16 years ago. There's 32 teams and 31 will be going home disappointed...and as long as we're still in it, I think we've got a good shot at it this year. :nhi:

And I extend the same wish of good luck to you. :)

Yeah remember the last time Spain lost to anyone it was the USA so with the majority of their players playing in the worlds best league (premier league/England) they should do well.

England will self destruct, hopefully Man Utd win everything before so when England lose it won't bother me that much. Would happily take England getting beaten by the Americans 10-0 if it meant United won the champions league/premiership. When it comes to club vs country I couldn't care less about England!

World Cup isn't great with the pressure it always seems a little boring with a real lack of atmoesphere. Still wouldn't miss it for the world!!

I wouldn't say that it was a 'thriller', I'd say that it was a sad day for England, hopefully it will have no effect on the English teams chances of winning the World Cup, I personally think that this year is the best chance England will have at winning the World Cup for a long time.

If I was recommending watching football to someone who hadn't watched I would always recommend the English premiership. Easily the best league in the world. I would also say the Champions league. Don't watch the world cup! It's always at the end of a very long season (players tired) so the best players (rooney will have played around 60 matches this year!!) won't be at their best. Plus the occasion and pressure makes for tight, boring games. I won't even bother watching the final (unless England get there) because it will bore me. I'll be watching the British Grand Prix instead! And this is coming from a football obsessive!!

You misunderstood me or maybe I was unclear in my expression, I meant as a Milan fan, it was a thriller the dramatic win achieved on the stoppage time by excellent distance strike from Seedorf (another great footballer).
Seedorf entered the game as a really late substitute. Milan had countless chances before that, only to score on 90 + 2 minute of the game.

As for Becks, it was an unfortunate blow for him at first place then for all of us fans, be it England, LA Galaxy or AC Milan fans.
Today he underwent an surgery which was completed successfully, we all hope he fully recovers and, God forbid, this is not the end of playing for him. The surgeon stated that he needs at least 4 months to recover so he can start training and an additional two months to start playing.

World Cup is never boring !
It is the climax which football world expects to happen ( and it does ) every 4 yrs.
I never stop to be amazed by the progress the game makes from both tactical and physical aspect, this can be seen best every 4 yrs. during the World Cup.

Pfffft, who cares about soccer.

I say this as a certified ignorant American.

A lot more people than you might think (even in America)...and I use this as an example. I've been getting Sports Illustrated for the last few years now and one stat in an issue last year really caught my eye. This particular issue was late January-early February and they ran a "By the Numbers" segment.

"Stat #1: 20,000: Number of season tickets sold for the MLS expansion Seattle Sounders FC despite not having played a game yet (it was their inagural season...and I'm happy to report they sold out every game with 30,000+ spectators at each home game, they'll be expanding capacity for the '10 season...which is huge in this country)"

"Stat #2: 16,000: Number of season tickets sold on average by the Seattle Mariners (local Major League Baseball team) each year over the last 5 years."

In summary: Football (Soccer) is becoming so relevant in this country, it's starting to beat out America's pastime in some places.

It is compared to the Premier League or Champions league. Last time 1-1 ended with penalties. Before in 02 was 2-0 and a bring game then 3-0 before that in a completely one sided affair, then before that it was 0-0 and penalties. The season is to long and the best players at the big clubs will be exhausted.

Nothing wrong with a tie end result !
I don't like the matches in which are scored more than three goals !
For me, the best results are 1:0 (0:1) or 2:1 (1:2). I believe that more goals than this it must be something wrong with defenses or one of the teams is away under par.
In these cases that is no football, you may call it basketball, handball, volleyball or whatever you like result wise.
If you watched the last night Chelsea - Inter, you'll know what I mean. Only one goal scored but you can't take anything away from that game, it was tactically perfect, from Inter's perspective, and full of suspense.
I agree CL is very exciting and interesting but World Cup, man, that is an event !
During 2006 WC you had dozen of great and full of suspense matches. All matches Italians played where such ( vs. USA, Australia, Germany, France), also France had some great matches (vs. Switzerland, Spain, Brazil, Portugal and final against Italy), Germany had great marches against Argentina and Italy, Portugal vs. England and Netherlands, Argentina vs. Mexico etc.
Premier League is all about physical strength, run, run, shoot, shoot and many airballs, not much tactical brilliance or defence, for which I praise Serie A.

The probability is the respondants that said no to the poll are American (though I'm not sure). I still don't get, as an American myself, why we don't watch or at least pay more attention to, the World Cup. I know we aren't known for our love of football (association). But then again, we don't typically watch track & field, swimming, curling or skiing, yet come Olympic time we'll watch them all en masse. This is essentially the equivalent of the Olympics for football. I honestly think we'd pay more attention to it.

Ah well, more room closer to the TVs at the sports bars for me! :nparty:

I have to say that it really does surprise me that Americans don't pay more attention to the World Cup, the recognition that a country is given if they win the World Cup is astounding and it seems as though Americans simply don't care about their country receiving praise and I know that that can't be.

Oh well, like you said you get better seats at the sports bar, LOL.

I actually heard a pretty interesting argument on ESPN last year when we beat Spain in the Confederation Cup as to how Americans will get into football (soccer). They said the country would need to either a)win the World Cup or b) produce someone that is, without a doubt, one of the best players in the world. I actually have a feeling we could accomplish (b) sometime soon.

Back in the late 80s-early 90s there was a huge push here to get kids into youth athletics (really there still is). Ever since then, soccer has been the dominant youth sport in this country. Well a lot more of those kids who were part of the initial push stuck with their sport and they're starting to get to about pro-age..and the sport has only grown in the last few years. So, I honestly think this country is becoming more football-savvy. Further proof in one of my earlier posts: http://www.avatar-forums.com/sports-forum/8931-2010-fifa-world-cup-3.html#post234225

And yet more proof...even the gridiron boys are getting it! :ncool:

It's almost impossible to know who's just going. There are so many elite nations in the pursuit this year it's just so difficult to have a solid guess. The 2 favorites are Brazil and Spain.

Brazil have the best defense going into the tournament, with a solid midfield and quick strikers.

Spain are going in with probably the most well rounded line up there is. Their midfield is a force to be reckoned with, and Villa and Torres upfront are nightmares for the defense. But Spain's defense is where they lack. Sure, they have Casillas, who's one of the best keepers in the world, but their back line may have trouble holding against teams such as Brazil and France.

Overall though, this World Cup will be the greatest ever, and I can't wait to watch these national giants slug it out.

If USA won the world cup, I think it would spell a huge wave of support for soccer that the US has never seen, which is good.

They're still in it as of now, aren't they? As long as they're in it, I wouldn't be counting them out. I've watched sports way to long to believe to crown a winner before the tournament is over. I don't know if they'll win it all, I don't even know if they'll win today against Ghana (I gave up predicting sports a long time ago), but I do believe they can go all the way. Say as you will about it. Maybe it seems impossible to many, but where would sports be without the dreamers? :nsmile:

You forget the fact, that soccer for a lot of people in Europe is not a sport.
It's a religion.

I'm from a country, where soccer is called King Soccer and is talked about like you would talk about a person or a god.
In this weeks King Soccer rules Germany. Everything is running around soccer.
You get off work early, if Germany plays, appointments were rearranged when they are at the time Germany plays and so on and so on.

And soccer is the possibility to joke around the others. Everyone here makes jokes about the French and the Italians ("4 years ago they met at the final, this year they meet at the airport."). And we sing the wonderful song "Football's coming home" with the refrain change "Football's GOING home", everytime we see someone from England.
Or the wonderful song "We don't give a **** who wins the match, as long as it is not Italy!" ;)

And whole Europe knows, that the US is not a soccer country. So... Isn't it obvious, that we all are making jokes about you in our soccer pride?

And as a proud German, second best nation in soccer (31 points, Brasilia has the same points, but won the worldcup 2 times more), 3 times winner of the Worldcup ('54, '74, '90), 4 times Vize-winner ('66, '82, '86, '02) and 3 times third place owner ('34, '70, '06), country of the best soccer clubs world wide, i HAVE to be patriotic and KNOW that my country will win this time. Again. And there is no way, that a team of a non-soccer-nation will win the world cup :D
It's a thing of patriotism :D

The probability is the respondants that said no to the poll are American (though I'm not sure). I still don't get, as an American myself, why we don't watch or at least pay more attention to, the World Cup. I know we aren't known for our love of football (association). But then again, we don't typically watch track & field, swimming, curling or skiing, yet come Olympic time we'll watch them all en masse. This is essentially the equivalent of the Olympics for football. I honestly think we'd pay more attention to it.

Ah well, more room closer to the TVs at the sports bars for me! :nparty:

I may have to take this back. :nlol:

Mostly true, except that with that much pressure on teams because of fan support we're seeing Italy and France and such losing before even getting to the finals. What do the US have to lose? If they lose, the support for soccer in the US has already increased this much, and if they win then it increases even more. I think the fact that there is not a lot of pressure on the US could influence their performance. But with so little talent compared to other teams, it may not, we'll see.

The officiating in this World Cup is probably the only real complaint I've had about this tournament. I don't know where they got these guys, but all around they've been bad. The two USA "offsides" goals, another magical offsides call disallowing a Mexico goal in their game against South Africa, the bad calls and non-calls, and now we've got this game (I just woke up so I haven't seen the full story yet). That's something that needs to improve before Brazil, 2014. :nsad:

Oh I know how that is. I'm the same way, especially with prosfessional football of the American variety. I even make jokes about my own team (the Buffalo Bills) all the time. I love them..but unfortunately, they haven't made it all that hard the last decade. :nsad: And I don't see the status quo changing anytime soon! And every team, no matter how good, has jokes you can use! ("What do you call a Minnesota Viking with a Super Bowl ring? A thief!"). But with that said, I have respect for all the teams not named the Dallas Cowboys or New England Patriots.

I've just never been one for "guarantees."

And as for the eight-legged freak...he's just a hungry octopus reaching into a box. As I've said, I've never been one for superstition. If I were I'd have to believe a goat and a black cat staring down Ron Santo were the true reasons the Chicago Cubs haven't won a World Series in 100+ years. American football coach Duffy Daugherty summed it up best.

"My only feeling about superstition is that it's unlucky to be behind at the end of the game."

Whilst I am not a huge supporter of soccer, rugby league is my game, I do appreciate most sports, and have followed the last several world cups. What I feel has let this year down, and I say this as a novice to the game, is firstly the bad refereeing or should i say suspect decisions. Would it hurt to have a video referee for important decisions, I mean for the world cup, many countries have had some very suspect decisions go against them this year. The video ref could also be used against those who really play up an injury to get a penalty.
In respect to the game itself, some brilliant ball play in some of the games I saw. Perhaps my main disapointment was the coach Australia had was playing the numbers game and should have put in a team in our first game against Germany that were playing to win. I mean this as no insult to Germany as they played brilliantly, my gripe is that you don't play to lose, our coach rested several pivotal players in that game which maybe he didn't understand, but went against the whole spirit of sportsmanship in Australia, and that is no matter if you feel that you will win, lose or draw, you go in and do your best, you get your best men/women to and never say die, even if you know you will probably lose.
I feel that what Pim Verbeek did in the first game really disapointed a lot of people over here.
Other than that, it was a very surprising cup in that many of the teams that expected to be in the finals weren't there, but that is good for the countries that did surprise.
