View Full Version : Avatar Blueray/DVD Shipping in 3D ?
Dno if anybody knows this, would it be possible for the film to be rendered in a 3D compatible version on Bluray/DVD or does your TV set need to be 3D compatible ? As far as I know it should be possible as long as the glasses are standardized ...

From what I have read, will come out on Blu-Ray but the player will need to be 3D compatible.

Its great how Avatar not only opened new doors to Holywood, but now pioneering that not all movies in 3D need to really be "seat clenchers." I would really like to see more movies like this in 3D.

I'll admit I haven't seen all that many movies in 3D but from what I have heard it gets to be annoying have things constantly fly at your face. James Cameron stated the "You see in 3D lets put that on the screen." (Very Loose Quote)

Hmm.. I wonder if you'd need one. I'd like not to buy one, but the PS3 and Xbox 360 were both quite capable of handling Avatar the game in 3D... and that used the same RealD technology as the movie, so maybe the movie could run in 3D on any blu ray player?
I'm more concerned about TVs :( I'm pretty sure mine isn't 3D capable.

Well actually this 3D blu-ray requires 240 Hz HDTV, so it could show the picture. I dunno about you, but I bought my full HD TV 9 months ago and it doesen't have 240 Hz. So basically I'd have to buy a new TV too:(

I think 3d television is a bad idea. Expecially when you need to wear glasses. I mean if you could do it without glasses it would be good. But otherwise the glasses seem like another remote to lose under the couch. LOL.

Yes, Any 120hz DLP Television Is 3D Ready. As Far As I Know, At Least With Currect Technology, The Only 3D Capable Tv's Are DLP. Which I Find Odd Because Everyone Except Mitsubishi Stopped Making DLP. My Dad Got One Of The Samsung LED DLP Televisions Before They Stopped Making Them And I Have Used It In 3D Hooked Up To My Pc With The Glasses I Got From Seeing Avatar In RealD 3d And My nVidia Steroescopic 3DVision Software.

Wanted To Add To This... I Saw Someone Post That The Tv Has To Be 240hz But I Dont Think That Is Correct. The Way 3D Works Is The Glasses Are Polarized Differently On The Right And Left Lenses. When The 3D Movie Is Playing It Displays Two Images, One For The Left Eye And One For The Right. The Polarized Glasses For Instance On The Left Lense Would Keep Your Left Eye From Seeing The Frame For Your Right Eye And Vice Versa. The Tv Has To Be 120hz Or Higher Because They Have Left And Right Eye Frames Running At 60fps Per Second Respectively. In Order To Run The 3D At 24p(film standard) You Would Need 240hz To Run Both Left And Right Frames At 120hz So Therefore I Believe 120hz Would Work But 240hz Would Be Smoother

To my knowledge: there won't be a 3D disk until the technology is available--at least not the type of 3D used in this movie. You'd have to have a 3D capable TV and BD player, which aren't available. At least not at a good enough price so that the average family could afford one.
I'm assuming this will be available on both DVD and Blu.

I have read that the ps3 is forward compatible for 3d (I have never seen this before). Sony reports that all it needs to do is a make new firmware for the ps3 to handle. They are also researching into another type of BR disc that can hold more memory too, well not really new disc, but a different algorithm that allows us to put more data into a BR disc, which means current players just need to know how to read them (decode). Otherwise as far as TV's go, the saying is that you need at least 240hz in order for it work. TV's I know currently with 240hz are samsungs 8000 and 8500 series, but i'm not familiar with 3d specifics. Glasses are a given that you must have a pair.
And yes blu-ray can hold 3d.

From my post, when I mentioned the 3D technology: I was trying to differentiate between those red/blue glasses. It was my assumption that you can see that kind of (old-school) 3D on any TV or DVD now.
So from what you guys are saying--apparently if you have a TV that has 240hz (whatever that means?) and a PS3, it'll play 3D? That's interesting.

Well the 2010 CES is going to be showcasing and introducing a lot of 3d. I will be reading up substantially about news from this event. It seems toshiba will be releasing their own 3d tv's.
Here is the deal with players, 3d will be a feature on newer blu-ray players (and will use a 3d compatible logo), not older ones. These players already have built in chips and their performance cannot be enhanced (which 3d will require). The Ps3 is a separate issue (because it does have a cell processor), it can be firmware upgradeable and since the ps3 itself has not even reached its full potential with current games/blu-ray movies.

If I'm not mistaken Sony is currently integrating 3D support for the PS3, so those who have a PS3 shouldn't necessarily have to get a new player.
The main issue will be whether or not your TV can support it. You need to have a LCD/LED TV with at least 120Hz refresh rate, or a Plasma TV in order to properly watch 3D film. If the refresh rate is too low, the image wont display properly.
The only other possible issue I can think of is the type of interface used. Newer versions of HDMI can support 3D, but not older versions. Thus, if you have an older TV with the older type of HDMI, it might not support it anyway.

You need 120Hz/fps input rate, most 120/240/600/xxxHz tv's on the market can only handle 60Hz/fps signal and that's not enough for 3D.

same, we got a nice new TV a couple years ago that I'm sure won't run 3D, even though Avatar is the only thing I want to watch, so we aren't going to be getting a new one. Guess I'll have to settle for the 2D, at least the story and the meanings won't change at all, even if it won't seem like I'm actually there.:(

I have limited knowledge in 3d tech, i admit it. But i think it will depend on the kind of 3d it plans to use. If you buy the blu ray 3d version and they simply have it play like it does in the theatre when you arent wearing the inexpensive polarized glasses then you wouldnt need any additional equipment. The image is from 2 camera's filming the same thing at slightly different angles, like human eyes. If they go one route the disk would contain the images from each seperate camera and have to render it itself, or have the disk contain the overlay image of both camera's and make someone buy some polarized glasses. So i had thought that the best way to sell the 3d version would be to do it the least expensive way for the consumer, sounds wierd, but if you make something more readily available to more people its better then less at a higher cost. There are already 3d movies, albeit far less advanced, that produce 3d with the red/blue glasses. The current tech thats starting to come out for 3d tv's is different then avatar. The new tv's have a processor that turn the 2d image into a faux 3d by copying the image and duplicating it ofset to create a simulated sensation of depth.

Actually i think it might be possible to make a fairly cheap, homemade 3d projector setup. Using 2 projectors, with a polarized filter attached to each, at orthogonal angles to each other, focused and calibrated on the exact same area on the wall/screen.
You'd still need to find a way of syncronising the pictures on the projectors, in a way so that they each show their own camera angle, which may, or may not be possible.
Also the projectors would need to be powerful, as a filter would cut a lot of lumens. Or you'd just have to live with a dim picture.

I'm lucky enough to just happen to have a 72" 3D TV (it's rear-projection so you sacrifice it being thin for a much lower price, but I have the space). The only problem is that it is checkboard 3D not sequential which means I have to buy a converter box.

The initial release of Avatar for home viewing will take place on Earth Day, April 22, 2010. That release will be utilizing the 'lean and mean' approach by not including any kind of special features or trailers. The point is to allow as much room as possible on the media for the movie. (The more available space, the richer the film can be)
3D will not be available on this release.
In November 2010 they will be publishing versions that incude extended features and 3D compatibility.
