Have the Na’vi redefined beauty?

Okay, maybe not in the literal sense, but does anyone think that the Na’vi may actually change, (to a small degree) what we find attractive? This goes for both man and women.

Ancient Egyptians were known to shave their entire bodies, from head to toe, (or at least from neck to toe in women’s cases) because it was considered beautiful.

Assyrians bleached their faces with white lead, because that was considered beautiful.

The Mayans flattened their heads using bindings to slowly shape the skull because that was considered beautiful.

During the Dark Ages, women preferred to on the heavier side, (it was a sign of opulence), because a little chunky was considered beautiful.

For over 1000 years the Chinese practiced foot-binding because small feet were considered beautiful.

In Elizabethan times women plucked their hairline because a high forehead was considered beautiful.

From the 1500’s to the 1800’s women commonly wore corsets, (which have been in use over 1000 years), and even had their bottom ribs removed because tiny waists were considered beautiful.

In Victorian times women began to embrace natural beauty, used fewer cosmetics, and oiled their hair down, because it was considered beautiful.

In Burma and Thailand, (as well as other places) women stretch their necks by placing rings which over time slowly crushes the collar bone (creating the effect of an unusually long neck). Why? Because it’s considered beautiful.

The Surma people of Africa stretch their lips, because it is considered beautiful.

Female circumcision, especially in the Mid and Far East is still practiced today, as well.

I could keep going, but you get the picture.

So, I wonder if the tall, slim, athletic physique and natural beauty of the Na’vi will have any impact of today’s perception of what is considered beautiful over the next few years?

Far fetched, you ask?

Have you seen how many people are drooling over the Na’vi?

The Na'vi, especially Neytiri, really do show that you should choose a woman more than just for her looks.

Ha ha, no no... I don't mean this in the literal sense. I am referring to the body shape/ lifestyle. Today’s preferred body styles seem to be, well… you know. Fake boobs, fake lips, permanently tattooed makeup, etc.

I’m just wondering how many more people will appreciate more ‘natural” beauty after their obsession with Jake/ Neytiri.

I don't think it really would really have much impact in the (Western) society's view ... their bodies in a way mimic the models we see today - tall and very slim. It might make people want to look more exotic I guess ... but we'll just have to wait and see

The only Na'vi that was pretty was Neytiri. Minus the blue skin feline characteristics, and massive height she is an exact carbon copy of a runway model today.

Well this is a topic that I've thought about before. It has always bothered me when guys say "I prefer natural beauty" and then go gaga over unnatural celebrities. Drives me crazy. But to answer your question, I don't think it really will. Maybe to some people. The Navi appearance is obviously influenced by feline features, which I believe has already been "shown in studies" to be considered more attractive. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, though.

Do you mean those models that are often getting accused for anorexia?

I don't agree with that. Those runway models are "pretty", because they are so slim. Neytiri on the other hand is beautiful because of her face and smile, and it would be wrong to compare her to such a model.

The only reason I ask is because of all of the posts about Neytiri/ Jake and how they look.

i would say that the na'vi haven't redefined beauty but have amplified the beauty in the humanoid form. their tall, slender figure, defined bone/facial structure, and soft features are all characteristics of human body that have been exaggerated and amplified in their alien form.

True, true. I guess "redefined" was the wrong word to use here. :D

In my eyes, natural beauty appeals to me much more than anything fake or exaggerated already, which is the main reason *why* the Na'Vi are so appealing to me, personally (and yeah, Jake in particular). Natural beauty comes from the body doing what it was designed to do, and doing it well, and there's no doubt the Na'Vi fit that description, I think. I also think a big part of that is personality...I loved both Jake's and Neytiri's personalities. They seemed very real, not perfect but very genuine. :) If Jake had been a jerk or really egotistical, his appeal would have dropped like a rock to me. If Neytiri had been at all catty or manipulative, I wouldn't have liked her at all. I'll be honest, if Cameron had made her more "voluptuous" I probably wouldn't have liked the movie as much as a whole, either...it would have been too much.

As female myself, let's face it...there's a point at which "bigger" just becomes more of a hassle! ;) I think it gets more attention, but there's always been a place for natural beauty. I'm really glad this movie stuck with more "natural" notions of beauty, physical and personality-wise. Just another point in its favor, in my book!

I have never liked plastic surgery and if I knew or suspect someone that got it done, it would make me think more negative about them. There is less attractiveness for me. I tell people not to do it. On the other hand, I think the movie strengthened my attractiveness for people with strong personalities. We always think about men being in charge and in the lead role, but if I ever meet a woman who defies that and starts telling me how I should be doing something or teaching me things, I may get offended but the attractiveness is there.

I think it's more of just them being so exotic.
In a way though they do have a dreamy beauty to them.

Few blue Na'vi make ups for Halloween - probably the only impact it'll have. Maybe some ethnic jewellery on daily basis too.

If the film had bunch of naked humans running around with their butts covered in mud; maaaybe then ; )

I think its really redefined inner beauty more. I hate it when girls are over obsessed with how they look on the outside, and that really changes who they really are. Funny thing, The Avatar Theme(I see you) started playing as I'm writing this. And I think it fits this because its what you see on the inside of people that should determine if your attracted to them or not, yes physical beauty does count for part of it, but the inner beauty counts for so much more..

Seeing Neytiri has made me look at a certain something in a women.

Her smile. I used to think that a smile was just that, lovely, nice, great... But that's all... Neytiri's smile is simply heart warming, literally, every time I see her smile, I feel a little bit better about everything. It is rather intoxicating.

I like the take on inner beauty. Some people just try to hard to impress others and end up covering their true self. And of course Neytiri's smile.
