A Bow From Hometree
I made this bow over a couple days. It had a younger brother, but it was oak and it snapped after some hard shooting:nlol:
Here ya go!

Isn't that a strange sound it makes? Death from above!

Go to a store that sells hickory.
Buy a 5 foot long stave that is 1 inch thick and 2 inched wide. It must have a straight grain.
Find the middle of the stave, glue on a grip, and draw where you need cut in order to make it a rough bow shape.
Clean up the grip and stave with a drum sander.
Spend the next few days tillering to perfecting, removing wood with a drum sander until it bends evenly (only removing wood from the belly).
It's a long hard process, but you get exponentially better every time you make a bow.
I learned everything I know from google...
There is quite a few detailed pictorials out there :nlol:

Nice I've made a few myself, although they are a bit bigger and seem heavier.

I made one out of hickory too, however one of my gym rat friends thought it would be fun to see how much pull it could take and he cracked it.

Nice but that does not look like a na'vi bow though...

Great job dude, fine work. I've been toying with the idea of locating an Osage Orange stave to make my own self-bow for a long time. About how long did this take you?

I still have an Elm stave here that is waiting for me to have time. My old one made from Ash has dropped way below 30# draw weight sadly. I built my old one over a weekend, so I think that is enough time if you have a stave like that and do not have to make it from scratch. Congrats on making that bow just with internet instructions - I had a RL teacher ;)

wow a functional bow? You guys are so creative! That's impressive.. I wouldn't know where to go about starting something like that.
Could I see some reference shots, who's bow was this originally?
And are you considering commission work for a Na'Vi costume?
Neytiri is already taken

Nice work. I watched the clip too.
Next up: shooting the bow while doing the Neytiri jump like in my sig. Good luck! :nlol:

Actually, shooting while moving would really be cool. Well, obviously that jump is impossible in RL, but maybe jump from a tree trunk and shoot? Shooting while riding a horse probably is also really cool, but I have no horse...
Very nice piece. You've got some good ideas and skills too!
