View Full Version : the Navi turning their heads 360 degrees and other fun stuff cameron left out
Now Im sure you have all read the good old Project 880 script- the orginal one Cameron had orginally wrote in 1995 now better known as Avatar. And if you haven't read it then the novel sized sciptment is all right here (http://james-camerons-avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Project_880).
I was just wondering if some of the things in there are still revelevant in the 2009 version of Avatar. For example can the Na'vi still turn their heads a full 360? Like an owl. It said that because their necks are so long they are able too and in the movie, I think Neytiri almost did when she looked up at Jake. But Im really not sure.
Also does anyone know if the ''Humans will never get a cold on Pandora'' thing is still true. I mean once again it seems like it would only make sense but we never hear about it in the movie.
I think if they could it would have been shown.
I was hoping to see some jointless fingers too, but nope he didnt do that either. Wouldve been kinda interesting to see it. And cameron described it as "actually quite beautiful".

I think in the end his goal was to make the Na'vi more human looking so the audience could relate to them. This is not District 9!

Technically speaking, if their fingers were jointless, they would be more like tentacles and would need massive amounts of muscle to just pull their bowstrings back. So I'm glad that never appeared in the film, would've freaked me out some.

O.o that would be kind of creepy to see Neytiri's head doing a 360 xD
Im sure some people would have called her some sort of Satan spawn xD

It was never in the script that the Na'vi could turn their heads 360 degrees. It is impossible. Neither do owls turn their their heads 360 degrees, I think you mean 180. The Na'vi can turn their necks almost 180, like an owl.

Humans can turn their head 180 degrees (90 degrees in either direction for a total scope of 180). Most owls can turn their heads about 270 degrees (135 degrees in either direction for a total scope of 270), they have to because their eyes are fixed in their sockets so they have no way to 'glance' one direction or another, they have to turn their whole head.
The Na'vi certainly have very long necks, though. I'll bet they could manage 200 degrees without any trouble.

Especially if you consider the only other person who's ever done a 360 was in The Exorcist...

Exactly my thoughts. I'm glad he left out some stuff, because it was easier to relate to them, being more human like. Well that's just me tho.

i don't think it would have been a good idea to have the na'vi be able to turn their heads around almost 360 degrees. it would have made them look more alien and not as attractive to humans in my opinion. i think they're really fine the way they turned out in the movie :)

i also thought of that... and how that's the most frightening part to a lot of people... so i can understand why jc did not include such a thing. it has been done before... and in a creepy way.

No you are wrong. You are confusing range of motion (range of twist), with the ability to turn/rotate the head. As far as turning the head goes, humans can only turn their heads 90 degrees. Range of motion is 180 degrees. The extent to which you can turn your head implies the angle covered in one rotation/turn. If you include the angle covered in either direction then it is no longer a turn is it? it is an oscillation.
Therefore like I said before, the Na'vi can turn their heads almost 180 degrees (perhaps in the region of 140 degrees, who knows).
There's some discussion on the prototype Na'vi in the Cinefex article here (http://www.digital.cinefex.com/nxtbooks/cinefex/120/#/74).

Whoops yeah I meant 180. 360, 180 same difference lol. Ether way I was referring to how in the project 880 thing they said the one Na'vi guy turned his head to face Jake even though he was facing the other way

Just because it wasn't shown, doesn't mean they definitely can't, but personally, I'd only take that being actually shown in the film or written in a source like the survival guide as definite.

Omg seriously? Then you definatly better be reading it right now!! Lol

You just said the same thing I said... but you're telling me I'm wrong. o.O huh?
A human, looking straight ahead and turning their head to one side can turn 90 degrees in that direction. Straight ahead to left is 90 degrees and straight ahead to right is 90 degrees. 90+90=180. That's why I made the point of saying '90 degrees in either direction for a full scope of 180'.
When i said the Na'vi could probably manage 200 degrees comfortably, I meant full scope. A difference in semantics is not an error.

i agree
in the 1995 script, the avatars and the Na'vi were described as blue, yes, but the striped markings were supposed to be almost purple.
And the hands were meant to be jointless, and all bendy, but "actually quite beautiful".
how very strange :)
i saw an interview with Cameron, too, how he discussed how he would have to make sure that the alien Na'vi didn't seem too, well.. alien.. that he had to keep making sure that Neytiri looked "sexy" and had the same kind of basic body structure as a human.
If they were not very human-like, his reasoning was that the cinemagoers would not connect with the story and the emotions between Jake and Neytiri if they could not relate to the characters themselves... so apparently thats why their physique is quite reminiscent of a humans. As for the bendy neck, i have no idea. And never having a cold...
I assume it is quite warm on Pandora all year round, if the atmoshphere can sustain such lush vegetation. And not forgetting that the Na'vi run around with the bare minimum of clothing :)

I can see the reasoning behind JC's decision to let the Na'Vi seem more human like, and it makes sense to do this. Whilst reading the scripment though, when I came to the bit where the Na'vi (Grace's boyfriend, can't remember is name right at this minute) I could really visualize his head turning in my mind's eye and really thought it it would look stunning, creepy but stunning.
Can you visualize that shot of Neytiri where she is looking around the tree before the animals turned on the humans, and imagine that shot as a 180 degree head turn, (shudder) it would be effective, but I'm glad JC decided to not include it as a Na'Vi trait.
