View Full Version : If it's going to be a war story, how will it keep a hold of the Environmental message

I have a modest suggestion.

Back in the 1980's the first follow up to the now-insanely popular Gundam franchise was being created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It was called Zeta Gundam. While very much a war drama, Zeta Gundam included some vestigial environmental messages and themes, which would be completely forgotten in the later installments of the franchise.

But, it stands out a bit in Zeta Gundam, where the heroes are reluctant to fight on the surface of the Earth, because battles damage the surrounding environment with things like shrapnel, leaked chemicals, and lingering radiation, among other things.

It has occurred to me that Avatar 2 could carry on the environmental message of the first, but in a different way. Rather than focus on man's connection to Nature, as the first film does, Avatar 2 could focus on what consequences take place when man inadvertently or intentionally damages the environment around him through our own selfish acts.

We don't need Eywa to teach man that he is on the way to destruction; after all, that's too cinematic, and really was the only part of Avatar I found to engage my "suspension of disbelief" circuitry.

In Avatar 2, man should experience the kickback of his selfishness; his enemies surround him, but because he did not care for the environment as the Na'vi do, his supplies run out, and he is routed by his foe.

The time may even come for us to get a glimpse of what happened to Earth; who knows?
