In this picture of Neytiri is one of aviator fly-goggles perched on her head--a leather flying cap on her head with
insect wings glasses--on them we can see also reflections in relation to the light source...This is nuts....AVATAR is incredible !

It is truly amazing how much detail goes into everything, it really is. Avatar is leading the way with CG movies, that's for sure!

Do you think those wings or transparent leafs are glasses ? i think they are meant to be more decorative, like that shiny spike thing in the middle of the headpiece which only appears to be there for decoration, nothing else practical.

When I first saw avatar, I could not believe that 60% of what I watched was CGI, it was that realistic. And in the non-CGI parts, I could barely tell the difference.
The most incredible bit that stuck out for me was when Neytiri looked over at Jake when they were flying their Ikran. The way her hair moved and her beads clinked together was so realistic it was like they had just got an actor to stand in a wind tunnel.
Definitely the game-changing film everybody thought it would be and i'd say one of (if not the most) visually impressive film of the last century.
And that's without the important message it sends...

That's just it, THEY DID. The actors had fake hair on their motion-capture helmets (their actual hair was covered by the helmet). This hair had motion capture markers on it, and when they shot the flying scenes, they had fans blowing on the actors.

Back on topic, I think the lenses themselves may have been to cut down on glare while flying.

Sorry, I thought the thread was about the visual glory of avatar. And yes, that and the constant wind in your eyes would have a bad effect after a while.

I am sure that in one scene, she puts goggles lower - but i can't wait to see all movie frame by frame on the DVD...:victory:

it is not to be more decorative - it is practic thing....
and that is the point here - about the visual glory of avatar :good:

they are probably also to protect the eyes from bugs and small particles of dust and leaves. the ikran fly pretty fast, and if youve ever cycled down a hill at high speed with no goggles/glasses on, a fly in the eye is NOT nice.

It's very personal Cameron film — Avatar was his personal goal to complete.
He put so much time and detail into everything in this movie...

Haha, that's my desktop right now and sometimes I catch myself staring at those winged goggles. The level of detail as has been said so many times is amazing. I heard they are using the same platform for the next film, which is great, but I also hope they throw in some new details, plants, animals, etc. on top of the old.

> They are used by aysaronyu when they're flying the Ikran. Note during Jake's first flight that he can't look forward because of the wind, since he doesn't have a pair of those goggles.
> But yeah, the detail level is superb. You can check on hi-res screenshots; you can see the tiniest of the details, like Neytiri's scar under her right eye, or the texture on Jake's teeth. And more interesting is the fact that during the movie, the characters move so fast, or stay on-screen for so little time that you don't even notice those details.

Using those insect wings as flying goggles is pretty neat.
In real life the native americans used cicada wings on headdress pieces because it could block some UV radiation.

I think that spike thing there is meant for aerodynamics to cut the air so to speak like the beaks of birds. I agree with everyone here, JC has put work even on the tiniest detail. Amazing.

Avatars have eyebrows and five fingers and toes on their hands and feet, whereas the Na'vi only have four fingers and no eyebrows. The Avatars are also broader in the chest and arms, appearing more 'muscular'.
In the final battle sequence, Neytiri has a white hand print on her chest as part of her warpaint. It has five fingers, indicating that it is Jake's hand (avatars have five fingers while Na'vi only have four).
The year is never stated, but the video log shows that the year is 2154.
The first (and only, as of 2010) science fiction feature film by James Cameron that does not involve or mention nuclear weapons.
The fifth movie to break the US $1 billion mark at the box-office.
When Jake Sully is ready to choose a woman, Neytiri tells him about the women in the tribe, starting with "Ninat is a great singer". One of Israel's leading pop singers is called Ninet.
Each frame (1/24 of a second) of the CGI scenes took an average of 47 hours to complete.
According to 'James Cameron, (I)' the Na'vi are blue to create a conceptual parallel with traditional Hindu depictions of God (e.g., in the forms of Vishnu, Shiva, Rama, Krishna, etc.), but also because "I just like the color blue."
"Ey'wa", the deity of the Na'vi people, is a mixed-up pronunciation of "Yahweh", the God of the Hebrews. Both names are based on the sound of breathing; the idea being that God is the breath of life.
Jake Sully's initials are the same as those of John Smith, the British explorer who fell in love with Pocahontas.
The concept of a network of trees in which minds of the deceased continue to exist appears in several novels of the "Ender" series by _Orson Scott Card_, most prominently in the "Speaker for the Dead" (1986). Just like in the movie, the trees in the novel are sacred to the native (remotely humanoid) inhabitants, who tolerate the presence of a small human colony on their world until cultural misunderstandings lead to conflict.
The word "Na'vi" in Hebrew means prophet. A Na'vi is a visionary or someone who communicates directly with god. Its pleural "Nevi'im" refers to the prophetic books of the bible including Judges, Kings Isaiah.
Jake learns the Na'Vi culture consider two birth days; the day a Na'Vi is born, and the day the same Na'Vi becomes an adult member of the clan. In his last video log entry, Jake mentions that it's his birthday (the day he was born, since he became an adult member of the clan halfway through the film). The video log shows the date as August 24, 2154.
The original cut included a sex scene between Jake and Neytiri. It was cut out of the theatrical release, but will be included on the DVD.

Actually what I notice from that image is first off the level of detail on the headdress itself: you can actually see where it was stitched together, and individual threads that wrap it together. That level of detail is unheard of, even in the vaunted LotR trilogy's CGI. Also, you can see waxy, specular reflections inside her ear, just as if you'd have when wax collects there.
In order to create the endless variety of realistic textures, shapes and natural movement must have taken -- well it DID take -- years of work, studying from real life, from nature, documenting hundreds of textures and reflections, photos, etc. It's crazy. And you know what, the second and third movies will be even more realistic, if you can believe it.

It's not that the story sucks, it's just been told a lot of times. That's what people mean when they say 'it sucks'.
Thing I found most incredible CGI wise was when Jake jumped off a cliff into water, to escape the Thanator. That whole waterfall and the river where he swims in is all CGI.
