View Full Version : Your Favorite "Missing" Music

What are your favorite musical moments in the film that didn't make it onto the soundtrack?

For me:

Moving the lab to Site 26
Jake being painted by Neytiri prior to becoming one of the Omaticaya
Any of the scenes involving Quaritch/Selfridge/Jake around the holographic projector

It's a shame, because each was a memorable theme. So what are your favorite "missing" elements from the movie that aren't on the soundtrack?

Summarizing what others have said:

Scenes from Avatar (composed by James Horner):

Neytiri painting Jake before he officially joins the Omaticaya clan.
Flying to Site 26 after Grace finds out Jake's been working with Quaritch and Selfridge.
Thanator scenes.
Neytiri teaching Jake the Na'Vi language.

Music from the Trailers (not composed by Horner):

My Name Is Lincoln, composed by Steve Jablonsky, on the soundtrack for The Island.
Guardians at the Gate, composed by audiomachine, not generally available.
Akkadian Empire, composed by audiomachine, not generally available.

dunno, but My Name is Lincoln, the 1st song on the trailer should've been on the soundtrack and should have been called My Name is Jake....

When James Horner did the soundtrack for "Braveheart" and "Titanic", they came out with a second CD and each contained more music from the films that didn't make it into the original soundtrack recording. I'm hoping that will happen with "Avatar" too!

I wish the song "My name is Lincoln" got onto the soundtrack. I would have liked the music in the Thanator scenes to have made it in as well.

I'm not sure it's used in the movie, and it's probably not, but I noticed a song that plays at the beginning of a behind the scenes video about the art of performance capture that I just really love. Here's the video on youtube:

YouTube - Avatar Exclusive -Behind The Scenes (The Art of Performance Capture)

I just know James Horner made it for Avatar because the type sounds and rhythm and its overall emotion fit the rest of the soundtrack perfectly.

LOL. I love that song - actually bought the whole soundtrack to The Island just because of it. There are a few other decent songs, but nothing like that.

The composer, Steve Jablonsky, also did Transformers, which has some great stuff on it (one of my favorites is track 3, "The All Spark").

Yeah, me too atokirina. With this film being such a huge success, I can't see them not doing it.

My favourite piece of missing music that didn't appear on the soundtrack is when Jake is taking part in the ritual which will make him 'one of the people'. Neytiri is smearing white paint on his face. It's very moving music.

Conversely, although it was on the soundtrack but not in the film, I like the section of music from the track titled 'War' (from about 6:58 onwards). That was a very powerful and dramatic cue which I really missed when I saw the film for the first time.

I agree. Definitely ‘My Name is Lincoln’. The Site 26 music, where Jake and Norm first see the floating mountains would be a great addition as well.

I personally loved the 'music'(if you can call it that) featured in the Avatar reveal trailer from August and would love to get my hands on it.

I'm guessing it's not on the soundtrack but I haven't got mine yet so I can't be sure.

The scene where Neytiri is teaching Na'vi language to Jake
there is a background music that fit very good in it

but all the music of the movie is just great in my opinion!

Totally Agree!

And I also feel that Avatar's music was perfectly done according to the theme. Soundtracks have different production objectives that's why they did not put all the music that we are talking about.

After seeing it again in a theatre for 4th time, I have to say, the ominous cue playing over Quaritch's 'jujubes' scene near the beginning is great in a menacing and foreshadowing kind of way.

Even the tracks that do appear on the score have been cut and re-edited in the movie. This will have been done to fit the cue to the action taking place onscreen, which as I'm sure many of you soundtrack fans out there may have noticed too. :)

Yeah audiomachine does not sell their music to the general public, which is why its not on the soundtrack.

Yeah audiomachine does not sell their music to the general public, which is why its not on the soundtrack.

Like a lot of commercial music companies, Audiomachine deals mainly within the advertising and marketing sector, which is why their cues are so prevalent in trailers, advertisements etc.

This is a real pity, because there's plenty of public interest and demand out there for this material. I'd certainly pay for this music if it were available to me.

Id pay for it, for sure. They have a lot of very cool stuff out there!

Does anyone one know of anything that sounds like auiomachine, but isnt licensed only to marketing studios?

Definately the track that's in the scene when Neytiri flies on her Ikran, and Jake only watches.
That track is played in background on avatarmovie.com
It's great :D

mine would be when all of the Omaticaya are singing around the tree of souls should have been on the soundtrack

I noticed that there seems to be a major cue that I'll call the "victory" theme that's missing from the soundtrack - it begins in earnest after Neytiri radios Jake to say, "Eywa has heard you."

I think it's also used the first time we see Hometree, and it may also be the basis for some of the scenes referenced in this thread (I'm thinking possibly the approach to Site 26).

Do you guys know what I'm talking about? Can you think of other scenes where we hear this theme?

Only other one I'm familiar with is X-Ray Dog - X-Ray Dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Ray_Dog) or X-Ray Dog Music (http://www.x-raydogmusic.com/)

I somehow got one of their tracks as an MP3 and quite like it. I'd imagine there's more out there, but haven't really looked.

ETA: Have looked. See much did... :nsmile:

Ahhh, I thought so, loved transformer too, avatar is leaps and bounds better though. I d/l the mp3 for "Lincoln" and jam it everyday since I first saw the trailer

Not sure if you got the answer to this yet or not, but this is the bonus track that can be found floating around on the Internet. To my knowledge, it is not featured in the movie at all.

Noticed two other cues that are unique but not included on the soundtrack:

Jake's introduction to the direhorse (strong flute feature).

Jake's attempt to bond with an ikran (some kind of semi-techno reverberation theme).

There are a few but I would've loved if the My Name Is Lincoln song was on the soundtrack.

I noticed the song where they're trying to revive Grace isn't on the soundtrack (?), which is too bad because I liked it, it had strong tribal percussion and I liked the kid's voice. Oh well.

The music that plays when Jake goes into training and the camera focuses on the Direhorse eating the nectar....

I actually posted this in a different thread, but here's a list of all the music I noticed in the film that weren't on the soundtrack:

James Horner stated that there is actually more than 3 hours of actual score made for Avatar. Lots of it was cut out. After a few viewings of the film, I actually noticed many songs that weren't included in the soundtrack. For instance:

1. When Jake, Grace, and Norm first land on Pandoran wilderness
2. The Thanator
3. Neytiri's first appearance, about to kill Jake.
4. Viperwolves
5. The first morning after entering Hometree (might be the same song as #1)
6. Neytiri first shows Jake the Ikran.
7. First trip to the Hallelujah Mountains (Oh.. My.. God)
8. Jake fights his Ikran, and when he's struggling in the air.
9. Encounter with Toruk
10. "Everything is backwards now" (starts with piano)
11. Neytiri paints Jake for the acceptance ceremony (starts when Jake is talking with Quaritch)
12. The Tree of Voices (I think there's a different song being played as well as the one in "Becoming One with Neytiri")
13. Escaping the RDA base - going to the Tree of Souls
14. Claiming Toruk (Everything boils down to one insane move)
15. Jake - Toruk Makto (I will fly with you)
16. Jake talks to Eywa before War
17. "Eywa has heard you"
18. Fight with Quaritch
19. Jake opens his eyes (it might just be a couple tracks mixed together)

The "victory" theme you were referring to is probably both in #7 and #17.

mine would be when all of the Omaticaya are singing around the tree of souls should have been on the soundtrack

Yeah that bit is actually on the soundtrack. It's near the end of the song called "Jake's First Flight"

That's the one with the prominent flute solo, right? When he's first about to ride a direhorse?
