I will greatly avoid any comparisons, as avatar is FAR in advance than what I am about to discuss in terms of both depth and effect, but I was wondering how many of the people on whom this film had great effect grew up watching TV and films like Fern Gully and The Smurfs?
I myself grew up watching films like Fern Gully on VHS and The Smurfs I watched on the TV almost every Saturday and Sunday on kid's TV shows. I was just thinking that maybe watching those kind of programmes as a child would mean that, on a subconcious level at least, avatar would resonate on a deeper level with me than someone who had not been raised watching this kind of material.
Again, this is not a comparison between the two, I was just curious.

Honestly, I never did like The Smurfs. If it was on, I would change channels to desperately find something else. It just never appealed to me (as a younger child). When I was younger I liked the cartoons like Johnny Quest, Dragonball Z, Beetlejuice occasionally, Rocko's Modern Life...stuff like that hehe

I hated the Smurfs, but hey, AVATAR is esentially my life. I don't think it makes a difference man.

Well, that totally disproves my theory. :nsmile:

I would watch The Smurfs if it was on.
I was a huge Star Wars fan since as long as I could remember.
As far as TV I liked He-Man , The Transformers , Voltron , Thundercats.
As I got older I became a Star Trek fan.

Haha yeah Beast Wars was pretty cool...and I think (at the time) a pretty new way of animating cartoons

Sorry, but I'm going to have to go with everyone else here as well.
I watched the Smurfs occasionally, but I was absolutely not a smurfs fan, and having seen Avatar in theaters twice (so far), I'm pretty sure I've seen that movie more times than I've seen Ferngully.

I find that very possible, i myself loved Fern Gully as a kid. I wonder if JC had the same kind of thing which influenced him on Avatar.
As far as the smurfs go, I don't think so...

I was a huge FernGully fan back in the day, so much so that when I found it on DVD in a bargain bin a few months ago, I snatched it up immediately.
Seriously; TIM CURRY SINGS. It is difficult to top a fact of that awesomeness.
But yeah, as a child, I was too young to understand the message that FernGully had tried to teach me, so Avatar was kind of my second chance; I'm glad I took it!
