Dont really know what to call this thread so...

I know that recently we had a rating system on the forum, but that is not what im talking about here.

Have been view another forum site (Non-Avatar Related) and they had this interesting system at the bottom of each post.

EDIT: This system does not rate the USER it only rates the POST

http://www.avatar-forums.com/images/imported/2010/01/64.png

People have the ability to post almost "quicker" comments on not only the first post, but all other posts.

Some of the ones they had on the forum were as follow in the pic above:

Agree (Green Check Mark) Disagree (Red X) Funny (:P) informative (Blue Circle with white I) Polite/Nice/Friendly (Heart) Useful (Wrench) Optimistic (Rainbow) Artistic (Paint Pallet) Late (Alarm Clock) Bad Spelling (Check with ABC) Bad Reading (what looks like a paper with a yellow ! over it) and Dumb (Cardboard box)

I thought this could help the forum by giving feedback to people in a quick and easy way. Can also apply to comments people post.
Anybody else think this would be a good idea?

On a side note, while surfing this forum site i found this:

It made me smile, and may have even made my day :)

I'm sorry, but I have to say that I am against this.

Putting grades on other peoples posts, spelling etc - and we go down to where we were with the experience system...

I think it's a good idea, if it stays the way that you can "agree" on a post, and not "agree" with an user.

I tend to agree with Eltu. This would just result in some feeling bad after their posts are rated badly. Then people may rate others' badly if they are in an argument, some may tell others to rate theirs better etc.

Why not let us simply enjoying our community without any rating systems. We have something very special here and its nice to write with you all without the need for any competitions.

Let it stay the way it is - a board full of friends :)

If someone posts something good and worthwhile, other members will see this and realise it.

There is no need in making people's efforts into numbers.

Fully agrees.

Maybe if there was just an agree option, just because cause anything that allows a permanent negative grade on a post seems like a bad idea. If you think someone has problems with something in their post, it would probably just be a better idea to pm them some advice.

Well maybe we could limit it to more "positive" comments.

Examples being funny, artistic, optimistic, maybe even add some like technical and interesting. But leave the "negative" comments out

I agree with Eltu. I applaud your ideas at attempting to come up with an alternative system, though, Na'viwalker.

My thoughts on all kind of rating systems, including this:

This forum is unique in many ways. One of the best things about it is its feeling of equality. It differs from other forums because everyone here actually treat everyone the same. It does not matter if you have just came here or if you have been here since the start.

As it is now, we do not have any kind of computerized repetition system. Why do we not need that? Because we get to KNOW each other here. If a member is active, posts very thoughtful posts and contributes to the community, other members will notice that. It does not show as a number or as some colorized dots. It shows as true respect.

Members will not try to compete with each other, because that will not lead to anything. Come on, people. This is one of the very, very few places on the internet when you are not judged based of anything. People listen to you.

Now, there have been suggestions of having a reputation system in the forums, and a point system has already been implemented. I strongly dislike both (though especially much the rep system). Why? Because once you begin to measure people with ranks, points and numbers, this special kind of connection we have here will get weaker and weaker, to eventually disappear. Different members will be seen as "better" than others - because they have a higher reputation/level/post count etc. Say what you want, but many people will think this way.

Some members may stop having a good time being the highest priority (whether they want it ot not), and instead trying to gain as high "status" as possible, thinking that they will earn the respect of other members that way.

Ultimately this may destroy everything I like about this forum. Believe me, I have seen some other forums go down because the members get so concentrated of competing with the others that eventually the forums becomes nothing than a struggle for power.

This seems like it may work if it was limited to just the posts, if it was something that was stored for the user though, I think it would cause more harm than good. It may not be a bad idea just to have a system to quickly let people know there post are appreciated, especially when you don't want to clutter a thread with 3 word agreement posts.

I'll cut this short.

Many different kinds of rating systems have been suggested.

But we already HAVE this. We DO get feedback on our posts, by replies to our posts!

Is that not the best kind of rating system? Where we get our efforts measured in text, and not in numbers?

Oe mllte! We all are here, we all try to give good posts (true fans of Avatar) so there is no need to rate peeople or the posts. And if you post something that has your own opinion, then people with other opinion will rate is bad and then you are unhappy and might pay back and all kinda pointless false-rating things may come out...
