View Full Version : Question about the Imax screen

My Imax theater is no longer showing this movie on the big screen because they have replaced it with Sherlock Holmes and the Book of Eli. I am REALLY disappointed with this, and I did not get to go and see it on the Imax before they took it off. Now here is the question. Is their so called "Elite Cinema" bigger than a regular movie screen? Or is it almost the same size? It is only playing on the Elite Cinema 3 by the way.

Are you sure they aren't showing it anywhere at the IMAX any longer? I know that I read an article today talking about the IMAX revenues compared to traditional 3D ticket revenue, and it mentioned that IMAX theaters were slated to continue running the film for another 7 weeks.
I'm not familiar with the term "Elite Cinema" and I even tried Googling it for help, but I got nothing. Your best bet would be to just call them and talk to someone; you'll get a definitive answer in minutes and know for sure that way. =)

Yeah, they seriously aren't playing it for some reason. And it turns out the so called "Elite Cinema" theaters are just regular size. They are losing business this way. Seriously, Book of Eli, or Avatar? It does not compute in my brain. My Imax suffers from stupid I guess.

Yeah, that really sucks. Particularly in light of the fact that IMAX Avatar screenings are still selling out. I had a friend who went to see it for the first time tonight and she couldn't get tickets to IMAX an hour ahead of time.
There are other threads right now talking about how some theaters report every single IMAX screening selling out and people showing up 2 hours ahead of time to get good seats. Every. Single. One.
I'm not sure I understand why any theater wouldn't continue showing such a blockbuster; any movie continuing to sell out on it's FIFTH weekend from release is a godsend and a marvel. You don't discontinue it. And it doesn't surprise me that an IMAX theater has some normal theaters too; I can imagine people might go for the cheaper tickets now and then if the location was a plus.

They are bigger and screen proportions are 4:3 instead of ~2.2:1 on regular screen and the picture quality is much better. It's comparable to the difference between VHS and DVD.

That's very weird... they took it off of IMAX 3-D for Sherlock Holmes and Book of Eli? I was forced to watch Book of Eli last night (I DESPERATELY wanted to see Avatar again, but my friends forced me) and Book of Eli wasn't half bad, had its moments and an awesome ending I didn't see coming (still wanted to see Avatar haha), but Sherlock Holmes wasn't good. I didn't enjoy it... like it had its moments, but over all, it was like watching Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, just with more CGI, real actors, and a different story line.
But the IMAX 3-D by my house has a 6 story screen with 12,000 watts of surround sound.
But I'm super surprised they took Avatar out of IMAX 3-D, it's still selling out here where I'm at! You checked at other theaters by where you live?

Yea, it's like $16 to see that, but I find it so worth it! I get a weekly paycheck, and I look at it and think "I'm going to spend part of you on Avatar!"

I'm surprised they've removed it from your local theater and IMAX, it seems way too soon for that to be happening IMO, I guess we'll all soon be seeing our beloved Avatar being removed from theaters and IMAX.

Don't be sad when the movie isn't played in theaters anymore...
That just means that the home theater version is coming eventually! (and I just got a working Blu-Ray player!!!)

AS I know... there are 2 types of IMAX, one is playing with 75mm films and the other one is playing in digital.
Normally, Digital can give u better 3D version than the films. However, if your local theater get a huge screen, some resolutions will lose in digital, but for 75mm films, no this problem at all.
I think u better go to the theater and ask for the actual screen size

I'm a little confused (and new) here...
I've seen Avatar twice now in two different IMAX theatres - the traditional kick-*** really large one, and the ghetto baby IMAX. It seemed like the screens were different in both - with the traditional having a much more squareish look and the ghetto IMAX having a more traditional rectangular appearance. Am I making this up?
Regardless, I found the 3D to be better in the ghetto IMAX, while the audio (and sheer screen size) were far more impressive in the traditional IMAX. There was simply no comparison when it came to explosions - the sound system was cranking out some serious bass in the big IMAX theatre. :victory:
Oh, and FWIW, I drove two hours to get a ticket, then found out some friends wanted to join, and had to wait twelve hours to see the movie because every single showing was sold out except for the last one (which would let out at around 1:30am on a weekday). And this was the fifth week in.
Pretty darned impressive in my book - can't wait to see it a third time!
ETA: Oh, and the last showing sold out too... :nwink:

i had to take the tickets 2 weeks in advance! 10:30 pm representation and it was still full at 95%+
was totally breath taking compared to the 3d, ive noticed a better resolution and more noticable 3d effects on smalls things
and funny part was when people where walking back to their seat in the beginning and we all know that there is quite a few big 3d effect at the start, i felt like they where actually behind the 3d effect, was quite funny and impressive
Anyway the next 3d is ? how to train your dragon ? witch comes out mid march? so you have still over 8 weeks to test that magnificient imax experience!

Hos big is that screen in metres? The IMAX screen in Melbourne is 23m which is supposedly the 3rd largest screen. I wish the 'local' IMAX screen was as close as yours and not an hour and a half away like mine. Still worth the drive to see Avatar.
