As someone who has collected lots of DVDs in the past, it seems like the movie studios started this trend a while ago--the trend being to release a single disc edition with just the movie (and maybe subtitles or other language tracks), and then release a "double disc special edition", with the second (or sometimes even third) disc containing all the bonus features.

I remember when they always used to just release the double-disc (that is, if there was enough material to warrant that) and sell it for the regular price. Now, they release both, and charge extra--and it seems like on may titles, the bonus material isn't really worth it (Star Trek, though, had great material on it's 2 disc edition).

Does that make a difference to anyone here? Do you prefer having just the movie, and not care about the special features, or does it depend on what the movie is? Do you think the studios are trying to rip the consumers off, or do you think that have other (good) reasons for providing both options?

I'd also like to know your thoughts on bonus material in general. For the majority of DVDs, do you think the quality of bonus content has improved, or have the producers of special features become lazy and boring? Star Trek, for instance, had some really fantastic bonus content, but that's the only recent example I can think of.

depends on the movie. Take in case the lotr extended editions there were 2 extra discs per movie and there was realy nice stuff on it. but some movies do it in a cheap way like throw an behind the scene's clip of 10 minutes on it and call it an dubble disc edition with nice bonus features :P in such a case nah just give me 1 disc with just the movie but when there's some nice making offs and interviews on it i always go for 2 disc edition's (of a movie i like of course). iam realy hoping on a nice 2 (maybe 3 ^^) disc edition of avatar cant wait to get that one :D

i would have to agree with you. normally i don't care about the double disc features. unless it is a movie i really like. like you said LOTR, that was really well done with the extended versions, and was something i got. After seeing Avatar, and some of the stuff floating around on the web with behind the scenes stuff. Also some speculation of it being an extended version for avatar, i would easily see myself getting even a 3 disc set.

Have to agree with you the LotR extended versions was worth it and I hope the Avatar one will be similair.

About bonus material its a hard question, it really depends on the movie if its worth or not. But I think Avatar will provide some interesting bonus material.

I'm only in it for the extra footage PROVIDED Neytiri doesn't get preggers at the end. Nah, screw it, even if she does get fat and nurturing. LotR extended has been my life since it came out. I watch it regularly, all the extra footage is amazing in it.

I want all the special features, everything there is. Don't like the idea of having to pay more, but I know I will if I have to.
