My dad had this book on the making of the lord of the rings and I was bored so I started to read it. The stuff they did was amazing. You know Orthanc, that look incredibly realistic yet the model used for Orthanc was no taller than me.
Weta is just incredible.

WETA was not the only studio that worked on Avatar, there were many studios around the world who all contributed to it's awesomeness! they all deserve credit for the hard work they put into it. :) but yea WETA ofcourse did a great job.

Google images of "neytiri" and set the option to more than 6MP, you'll find a lot of high res stills from the movie.

Even after 6 viewings (so far), I still notice new little details. Truly a magnificent accomplishment on the part of WETA and all the VFX teams involved!

I have already said this in another thread... Due to Weta's success it is now an Australian company, we claim them. Weta is now 100% Australian :ntongue:

Weta is phenomenal. It's amazing to believe that the entire company started from a single computer where they made Heavenly Creatures. They continue to be one of the best Visual Effects houses in the world.

The same people that brought us Gollum. As far as I know they work for directors in CGI. Not sure what it stands for.

They actually do more than CGI. Weta Workshop does all sorts of things that usually look better than digital animation. Most of the structures from LOTR are giant sculptures made out of random materials like styrofoam.
Weta Digital does the special effects.

Weta is the best. All their work has been incredible. My 3 favorite movies all had the visual effects done by them. I can't wait for the next one, probably going to be The Hobbit... pretty sure thats being done by Weta. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Haha, yeah. Who knows, maybe sometimes in the future when we are able to create entire planets... That would be the best job ever if you ask me :P I envy Slartibartfast.

To get a few more big res. pictures, you can go to the Avatar Official Movie Website (http://www.avatarmovie.com) and from there in the image gallery select one and click on the "view on Flickr" button that will lead to something like that : OfficialAvatar picture gallery (http://www.flickr.com/photos/officialavatarmovie/4116455578/in/photostream/) and then from there you need to click on the little + up left of the pic which leads to various formats like this link : various sizes of the selected image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/officialavatarmovie/4116455578/sizes/l/in/photostream/) and the biggest one for example is 3080x1733 pixels which is quite big already...
Am including all the steps because while it may be obvious for many, it wasn't for me at the start and I was only downloading small versions and not understanding why I couldn't access the bigger ones, silly me ;) !

I have conversed with a someone from WETA and they were extremely nice and helpful...and the person I talked with was not simply someone who answers the phone, the person I conversed with actually worked on AVATAR, and in my last viewing of the film, I saw the individual's name in the credits...pure awesomeness! It left me with a great impression of both New Zealanders and the company. :d

The guys at WETA are freaking geniuses, they worked on Avatar, lord of the rings, district 9, King Kong and so many other movies (also one of Peter Jackson's first films brain dead, i love that movie lol)

I read an article about Avatar a few days ago and it said that 95% of the cgi was made by WETA, and the rest: Industrial Light and Magic and others^^
