We don't appear to have a London Olympics 2012 thread, so I've though it I'd start one.
And to start off, lets have a complain at the offical mascots.
41859
I mean, look at them! what do they say about london or britian? nothing!
The designers spent so much time being artistic with the designs that they forgot to make sure they meant anything. Wenlock and Mandeville as names may be connected with the origins of the olympics and para-olympics but I had to look that up to find out. Overall while they may look nice, they say nothing.
Also they where chosen by school children.

They may have been picked by children, but they are sure as heck going to scare the children that are visiting the venues. I remember the hubbub about these last year when they were picked...a lot of scratching of the head. If you stare at them long enough, they could grow on you. :-) Of course, I don't remember a mascot being all that great for the games. Turin and Beijing failed also...

Make sure that Mom gives you the dish on all the VIPs and what is happening. She is officially our on the scene AF reporter there.
Friendship bands and Taxi Light? OMG, just looked at the picture more carefully. Inspired by London's black taxi's? Is that a tail or a fin on the back of Mandaville? OK, I am complaining now...ha ha ;-)

And lets complain about the opening cermony. The chinese go for spectial with hundreds of synonised drummer and dancers, and what does the british do? Maypoles, a game of cricket, glastonbury mosh pits and artifical clouds.

Well, when you get back, tune in to this thread and you will get the scoop! We got Omaticaya's mom as an AF reporter for some in-depth interviews...only to be seen here! ;-)
US Swimming finished the third day of trials and there were some wicked fast times. The energy level during my lunch time swim practice is way up as we are all glued to the set every evening. US Track and Field are finishing their trials and it is a strong team as well. July 27!

One of the shinning stars to come out of the US Swimming trials this year is the teen Misty Franklin. She will be competing in 7 full events with a high probability of pulling a few medals.
Misty is a student in Aurora Colorado, the town where the theater shooting occured this last week. She will be facing more scrutiny and pressure now as the press plays this sad scene out, but watch her. She is going to make some history!

Thats assuming the darn event takes place, over here we've had a crisis with the security firm the government hired to provide game security saying that they can't provide enough guards, leading to the army and police being drafted to fill the numbers, on top of an existing miltary commitment, there are now more miltary security personel in the olympics than civillians, and thats not counting the missile defences.

I heard that Paul McCartney will be in the opening cerimonies and will end his set with "Hey Jude." What do you think? When the long ending starts, do you: 1) sing along with the Nah nahs for 15 minutes, or 2) go to the frig and get another beer (or three)?
His daughter was the person who designed the uniforms for the British Team. I think I am more interested in that ;-)

It's not a 3D tv, so I don't think so? but if the 3D they show is side by side I can "cheat" a little. I learned that with the 3D on the Avatar game when I found out I could get it to go to the side by side mode, and using the crossed eyed method I could see it in 3D without having a 3D T.V.
Also I watched most of the opening ceremony too and I thought it was pretty good, I personally did like Mr. Bean, ( I remember watching him as a teen and thought his character was funny) the whole Chariots of Fire thing was good.

Personally I found the opening ceremony to be flawed. Don't get me wrong it was very striking but it is so referncial to the british only. I mean who is going to get the ship in the opening section (that was MV Empire Windrush the ship that brought Caribbean immigrants to britian). And its very interesting what they leave out of it like empire, the work house etc. From there we jump from set piece to set piece with little real connection.
Basiclly the entire ceremony is a fantasy for the birtish, a world where britian was great and powerful. A world that never really existed. And Bond and Mr Bean? were these the only british stars we could think of?

i was looking at the Wikipedia all-time medals count previous to 2012 for all nations in olympic history....holy crap, the USA has 2,549 medals all time. the only nations to come close are West Germany with 1618 and Soviet Union with 1204. geez :an-shock: i find it highly amusing that the vaunted east germany communists had only 519 medals for all their talk, once again proving that commies are nothing but hot air. lolz
the USA also has the most gold medals at 1,016, with West Germany/Germany coming in second at 528. eat that, chinese commies. grrrrrrr

Never really watched the Olympics, but I'm a bit more interested this time around. Probably because of Avatar. The Olympics can almost be seen as a return to nature (ironically, even though the events were a creation of one of the worlds most famous civilizations). A celebration of human physical strength and agility, the abilities we needed to live with the land in our distant past. I'd like to think the Na'vi would look on the our Olympians with approval. :nsmile:

Every one of them, even the Chinese are individuals and have the same likes and loves as we (you) do. Just because they have their game face on in one of the most important times of their lives does not justify a blanket condemnation. Now, the Chinese swim program does have an "*" next to some of their results, but those kids are more animated than you make out. Have you even seen some of the asian swimmers and how they act? I Had only spoken about the Physical appearance and my personal preferences personally, and that is just a simple opinion, De Gustibus.
But I admit, I Liked Ja'k's post because he was brave enough to say, in his own way ofcourse, what I kind of think too.
My opinion is this, I am a fair person, I am a Sports person myself, and therefore, no matter what country age gender you are, If You Win, you earn the respect, No doubt.
The only thing is though, I May be completely wrong, and If I am, whatever, call me a douche bag I don't care, but everytime I switch the Tv on Damn it, there is one country, against either a Chinese or japanese, and I'm like O.o
it almost seems like, it really is just about the 'totaliatarian' concept or whatever applied to sports, as if each one is born and 'forced' to train like a robot in just ONE disicpline, a few in each one. It freaks me out and seems Innatural. That's all.
An Example of Real Sport Champion and Example, and Passion in my opinion? The Girl that almost made me Cry, in my opinion the best of London 2012: Ruta Meilutyte.
I am shocked, I could not believe when is saw this happen. Here she comes, this 15 year old little girl, winning the Gold Medal at the Olympics! Against all these big grown experienced Women Many years older than her, and seeing her crying and emotional with an Olympic record aswell, and after the work she put in it all, switching countries leaving her Homeland just to endure her passion as a tiny little girl, and she made it all the way and Bloody deserves it.
So I may be wrong, but it seems to me all these asians just choose a sport as a kid, or better, are forced by some coach or oppressive parent to do it, and go mental with it, while I see so many athletes, in so many other disciplines that look more 'human', people that do rowing, but do skiing or swimming as hobbie aswell, bikers that have been swimmers too for instance, just many examples, instead of just being a robot, trained for the Medal and the country, instead of Training for the Heart! and the Personal glory.
Anyhow, Thumbs up for this little Heroine :good: :victory: 42534 42535

My post was not focused at you Omaticaya as you were sincere. Personal preferences aside, they are all beautiful. "When you turn out the lights, it's all the same darkness." Also, not all of the athletes represented are “forced.”
It was the blanket statement above mine that irked me.
Another good swimmer emerging out of the Games is Aya Tarakawa of Japan. Not only is she in the hunt for medals, she is drop dead gorgeous…in a physical appearance and personal preference kind of way.

the chinese commies must still answer for their war crimes of 1949-55, and the 1989 massacre of students at Tiananmen Suare. there can be no democracy without those scumbag commies paying for their crimes. mao must exorcised from the chinese history books the way lenin/stalin has been thrown out by the modern russian nation(s).Lenin is still respected in Russia. They still keep his body in the mausoleum.

so, apparently women's water polo is a rough and sometimes vicious sport, and i didn't know that NBC was broadcasting the games real-time live without the 3-5 second tape delay. i guess there was a 'wardrobe malfunction' lol, when one of the women pulled on another's suit, see picture :embarrassed: i guess NBC aired it and couldn't stop it because it was live. lolz

For the men, it can get far worse. A buddy of mine used to swim with the Men's Team back in the 80's and early 90s. The men are beasts. Think an NFL Linebacker that can swim almost as fast as Phelps and can tred water for several hours. You wear a tight under suit with another over the top. The draw string is very tight and tucked under the interior suit. A common tactic was to drive your big toe down the stomach and drive off the suit. There was a time when the nail of the big toe was long and you would have scrapes all the way down. I am sure that is not happening anymore. I had my suit dropped just a few weeks ago; its tough to play with a suit at your knees. :embarrassed:
PS, that is a foul, but hard for the refs to see.

Daily Mail – Boys and girls who looked no older than five or six-years-old were tasked with swinging on beams, hanging from pairs of rings and bounding across floor mats during the physically strenuous training sessions. The youngsters at the same training school will be hoping to emulate the success of 16-year-old swimming sensation Ye Shewin, who glided into the record books on Saturday night. Only last January harrowing photographs were posted on the internet showing Chinese children crying in pain as they were put to work. In case they had forgotten why they were there, a large sign on the wall reminded them. ‘GOLD’ it said simply.

Yeah, its ridiculous what they get put through to become the best. I honestly think they should not let them participate in the Olympics if they do that.

Well to be fair this kind of thing also goes on in western countries. Though it goes on in middle class athletics clubs instead along with 'verbal encouragment' from coaches and that all all powerful obsession with winning.

i disagree....the chines thing is a state-run program much like the soviet/east german machines, and the USA/Europe/Western countries are private schools, uni/college, and commercial-sponsor organizations that provide the funding. sure, they start young, and it is sacrifice/pain, but they made a choice. the commie machines just grind these kids out basically from the get-go. athletic-slavery. HUGE difference.

I recently read a really good book written by Dominique Moceanu. She was a member of the 1996 USA gymnastics squad that won the first womens all around medal ever for the USA. (2012 has now joined then in the feat) It was pretty awful a lot of the things she went through to achieve what she did. Two of the biggest culprits (Bella and Marta Karolyi) are still very much involved in USA womens gymnastics and it makes me sick. I picked it up off Amazon, its titled Off Balance, I read it all the day I got it and I couldn't put it down. Dominique has been one of my favorite athletes since I first watched her at the Atlanta Olympics so I found it really interesting.

Its a big amazing wank. I was watching the Track relays last night. My god, did you see how fast those people were? In the 4x100 relay, those men were rockets. It is amazing to see the caliber of the athletes in any sport that perform at the Olympics games. There is no other opportunity to see such fine examples of mastery, dedication, desire and sportsmanship from some of the greatest examples of our species around the planet (yeah, that was corny, but I believe it). Also, where can you see such diverse sporting events, some you may never have heard of. Then there is the "spirit" of the Games; an ideal of sportsmanship that came to us from the ancients. The games may not be for everyone, but the ideal should be.
PS I think the host country deserves a big round of applause for putting on such a great spectacle. Cheers!

Well we're almost at the end of the games and it's time for a bit of wrap up. Australia had won 7 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze for a total of 35 medals which is very good and i'm happy with what we've done. However it would seem that the Australian media don't agree. Normally very supportive, they've been very critical this year of our athletes, particularly our swimmers for not winning gold medals when they should have. So in their eyes, achieving silver or bronze isn't good enough and they should've done better. Bloody hell I hate the media sometimes! For god sake you can't win all the time. You win some and you lose some.

McKayla Maroney would be unimpressed with the coverage of the Olympics here in the States by NBC. I tuned in to watch sports and there was Ryan Seacrest talking about Twitter trends. Later, there was a history lesson about WW2. If you wanted to see Phelps or Bolt race, you had to wait until the late evening...already knowing the results real time via every other media outlet. What I did see was awesome; wish I could have seen more.

Just returned from London last night... Was truly Amazing, the atmosphere was Lovely, I was just shopping in Westfield, the huge shopping centre right at the Olympic park, and you have like, all the athletes just shopping around with you, everywhere you looked they had their Locog passes, including my mother, lucky swine*lol* I was not allowed inside the stadium... Crazy security, but honestly, better that way, it was all brilliant.
Few pictures from the spot...

I don't know. I don't know if he used it and I'm not in the place to judge him. Only thing I know is that I respect him because 1, he survived cancer, and is trying to help others. and 2, he said it, he will lose his awars probably. but he don't care anymore. That isn't true. He still cares but he is done with it. What I can understand.
