I haven't watched them all (including not ones that I know well) but watch some.

I saw Sylosis live a couple of months ago (although admittedly, they were playing support for DragonForce and Sabaton, who were the ones I was there to see), they were very good.

What other sorts of bands are you into?

Tawtaronyu
01-21-2010, 07:02 PM
Mostly Keyboardy metal/black metal. Mainly similar to Equilibrium. Also darker stuff like Limbonic Art, Diabolical Masquerade and stuff like Emperor, Immortal, Dark Funeral.

Also anything orchestral sounding that has a fairly dark sound to it. Movie scores or otherwise.

I'm totally wanting to start a band Equilibrium style. You don't happen to live around Yorkshire and play an instrument? :P

Leequilibrium
01-21-2010, 07:09 PM
Ahhhh, cool stuff.

Aw, man - unfortunately not :P. I'm sort of up and down between the South and the Midlands. I do play guitar, however :P and write a lot of music. Been wanting to start up a decent metal band for years but it's difficult for a few reasons:

A - It's difficult to find people with a similar taste in music
B - It's difficult to find people that play instruments that don't play guitar XD! If I wanted to form a band with some of my friends it't consist of about 5 guitarists and a drummer, haha.

One of the better Raintime songs.

Skyfire is really good I defenitely recomend checking them out as well. Now Opeth there's a good metal band, there has to be some Opeth fans here...

Check this song out, its from their first album, one I consider to be a masterpiece:

I'm afraid I'm of an opposite opinion, there. I think that from STYE onwards, they've been going progressively downhill. My favourite album of theirs is Colony - absolutely packed full of great tracks. The Jester Race is also a fantastic album. Reroute to Remain was an *okay* album, but that's where they started to go downhill for me. Their latest release was an absolute shambles, in my opinion.

I'd say that the older albums were more Melodic Death than the later ones. Colony, in particular, is a shining example of Swedish Melodeath. There are some good tracks on some of the more recent albums... just less, I think :).

And yes, Equilibrium are definitely badass. Really shame about Helge (the vocalist) and Manuel (the drummer) leaving, though :(.

Yeah, that's a fair point - Come Clarity had some good tracks on it, for what it was. I still maintain that the title track has one of the most beautiful, slow solos in metal. Crawl Through Knives also had a great intro riff :P.

But aye, A Sense of Purpose really was disappointing. Not HORRIBLE, but nothing really that memorable on it, in my opinion.

Take this life and reflecting the storm are the best tracks from Come Clarity in my opinion. Yeah, comparing the latest three albums ASOP was the "worst", liked it a lot though.

Really? When did they leave Equilibrium? I mean the drummer is a pitty, but the singer... thats a catastrophe xP

Yeah, Reflecting the Storm is a pretty good song.

It was announced a few days ago :(, paired with an announcement of a cancelled show, I think. At least they still have the main songwriter, so as long as they find adequate replacements, I have faith that they'll still be the same band.

I'd certainly like to hit BOA, again, this year! The line-up has skyrocketed in quality over the last few days... I was pretty skeptical with it, initially... particularly after Dream Evil pulled out.

Ensiferum are great live. I first saw them at Wacken 08; pretty spectacular. Saw them again, more recently, in Dudley UK. My friend manages their official Myspace, so I got that gig as a freebie on guestlist :P.

So, here's my first Avatar forums post... I thought this was an appropriate thread for me to start in, with my username and all ;).

I can't wait for Wacken 2010... my favourite band of all time (Iron Maiden) alongside so many other of my favourites (Equilibrium, Edguy, Arch Enemy, W.A.S.P., Stratovarius, Motley Crue... to name but a few) are playing, and the atmosphere in 2008 when I last graced the plains of the metal holy ground was fantastic!

I haven't got my tickets yet, but I'd also love to go to Metal Camp, Bloodstock, Sonisphere (for Iron Maiden) etc...

Really pleased to see how many people seem to like Equilibrium on here, by the way... it sucks that it's not really going to be the same now that two of the members have left, but I'm still very much looking forward to seeing them again!

Good to see another person likes slipknot. I just love the simple guitar riffs combined with the complex drum work. It's perfect, although their songs from Vol. 3 The Subliminal verses and All Hope Is Gone are a different style. But still good. I would imagine that's how the Na'vi feel about humans, to see a crowd of Na'vi going f***en insane at a Slipknot cncert would be A.W.S.O.M.E Amazingly Wickedly Super Overly Mega Epic :nlol:

Power Metal, Prog Metal, Black Metal and Death metal are the only ways to go, and generally only if they have symphonic elements.

Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the Great Apocalypse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-hsa1a7kyM)

Fairyland - Score to a New Beginning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_irSTG6Yowc)

Honestly, anything with symphonic elements is perfect for Avatar because it fits the sci-fi and fantasy genre perfectly.

I'll start it off with this:
YouTube- TURISAS - Battle Metal 2008 (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

Ultimate drinking song:
YouTube- Korpiklaani - Wooden PintsPERKELE YEAH! Turisas, Korpiklaani! Also, Ensiferum! All of them amazing folk/viking metal bands from Finland, prime reasons to be proud of my country's music scene! \,,/

You've gotta love some Folk Metal.I agree with this one, definitely.

Another sub genre I'm crazy for is power metal. Listening to Rhapsody of Fire's newest album as I type, shizz' so cash... Bands like RoF have inspired me a lot in role playing and writing, so epic, fantastic.

I am also an avid Nightwish fan, another metal band from Finland (don't know if NW has been mentioned in this thread already, didn't read every post as this thread is lengthy). It's labeled as symphonic metal, and they used to have strong opera-vibe with the previous singer (the new singer is absolutely fine as well).

Here's some Nightwish, when I listened to "Wanderlust" for the first time after watching Avatar, the part "discover the deepest jungle" got to me very powerfully.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0RnPHfLrkY

And a more folkish, instrumental track from Nightwish, Last of the Wilds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrIz0KCq1YA

Oh, and I got to link this one as well, Creek Mary's Blood:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33bRVPpZ6BI&feature=related
Fittingly accompanied with "Dances with the Wolves" music video, the lyrics deal with native American cultures and their fate. The song is featured by John Two-Hawks, a Lakota, he recites a poem in his native tongue at the end of the track. This song just begs for an Avatar music video, if you ask me...
