dang, that's pretty deep in the ocean,at 14,000 feet deep. Titanic was found at 12,000 feet deep, and they had incredible difficulties in salvaging even small things like the ship's bell and porcelain dishes, much less a 83-ton F1 engine. holy crap. best of luck to them, would be interesting seeing their condition, though.

I'm pretty sure the F-1 engines were less than 83 tons! :an-shock:
This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-1_rocket_engine) page gives the dry mass at 8 391 kg, burnout mass (presumably including things like soot, propellants still in the pipes, etc) at 9 153 kg. I would imagine that's still quite a lot for underwater recovery though.
It'll be fascinating to see what they look like after reentry, splashdown, and 40 years on the ocean floor though.

Too bad he can't likely lift the while stage. Still interesting, though! Would be interesting to see if recovery projects like this continue and what we might find.
