I thought of making a thread since it has got really serious and sad now :nsad: It has been a magic dream come true for things such as the white Colosseum and Venice becoming one Solid city, as they can walk on the frozen canals at the moment :) But after hearing the news... :( It's not all good and fun for everyone... Up to this moment, the death count throughout Europe is 280+
The most deaths we're in Ukraine, Romania and Poland. In Italy some areas hit -24 celsius, and in Ukraine, the coldest was -33 celsius. In Italy 19 people have died, just now another death of an old woman was reported... Most of them in Italy we're homeless people, died 'frozen'... :ncry: terrible :nsad:
Also many villages in the mountains are isolated and basic foods are beginning to lack, not to mention the amount of dead fish that was found floating on the surface of the sea... Even they froze... :(

There has been snow in North Africa aswell! :O Snow in Algeria... Pretty rare.

And here it has been much warner than usual for winter and we are in a drought that has killed millions of trees. Very sad only. Here's hoping things improve soon. Stay warm,

Oh I'm sorry for the drought over there matey :nsad:
And thankyou very much, I will, but I'm fine really, It's the people in the streets and in the east especially that are in trouble... :nsad:
Cheers 'itan Ateyo

on one side I think. when you die with this weather. it is maybe better to die now than still need to life outside with no home :nsad:

but on the other side. how heartless creatures most people are... :nsad: Wished I could do something for that old poor lady, and ofcourse all the other people outside :nsad:

where it snows in one place,it pushes that cold towards another, causing much rain when it hits warmer currents. it rained here last three days, and so damn cold. brrrrrr

so sad to hear about so many deaths in Europe due to unusual snow, cold, weather patterns. i am always partial to the peoples of Europe,as that is where my heritage/ancestors originate, and i hope that the remainder of this winter season shall decrease in severity, and that the warmer weather patterns start in again soon....

What do you mean? Did a whole continent become retarded and suddenly lose their understanding of what cold is?

I've been following the weather story in Europe I find it interesting. That's what the weather is like up here for about 6 months out of the year. I can't imagine all those old buildings are very well insulated, must be a struggle to keep them heated. Plus I doubt most people there have the proper clothes or knowledge of how to deal with that kind of cold weather let alone drive a car in it...

I did hear that scientists found a large bluge of fresh water in the Arctic ocean. Now relating to a post I read in the "Something About Anything" thread, this is some serious news:

BBC News - Arctic Ocean freshwater bulge detected (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16657122)

If your gonna be incredibly vague about your posts then expect dumb replies. Not everybody here has a beautiful mind like you seem to portray and understands what the hell you talk about.

We've had the coldest summer here in about 10yrs or so with the temperature in the early to mid 20 degrees celcius instead of high 30s to 40s. It's pretty strange weather.
It's exceedingly sad about the coldsnap in eastern europe..Most of the deaths are from people who became trapped while traveling and people who literally froze on the streets because they don't have a home to live in.

Or just that Europeans aren't used to the temperature extremes North Americans are. Wisconsin likes to stay in the -40s when I visit my mom's folks there. What a European might call horrifyingly frozen an American might just shrug off. I can't speak for what Aihwa actually meant though.

I've been trying to look up stuff about this whole European winter thing, Google is completely failing me and the NYT too. Apparently America just doesn't give a **** about Europe.

I can't really comment on that. I don't know enough about either continents climates to say. I do understand what you mean though. During the summer when they have their heat waves they say how horrible it is yet for us here it's normal.

Climate-wise North America hits both extremes and has super-bipolar weather. States will be -40 in the winter and 40 in the summer. Europe tends to stay very temperate year round, visiting Europe I was always surprised by cool summers and warm winters. This is because NA is larger and mainly gets cold currents, and lacks the mediterranean sea. Thus why my state, while being at the same latitude as Lisbon, has very icy winters.

As a result, i'm guessing many Europeans aren't used to such extremes and many houses there don't have wood fire heating if the ice breaks the electric lines.

It's true they always complain about the weather here, and I Hate that, they're so ridiculous. Every summer, I'm not kidding, when it starts to become Hot, the news is all about that! and how apparently weird it is, like it didn't happen for the last Thousands of summers -___- And in winter It's the same, if it rains for a week or so or gets a little chilly, they all complain like they're going to die, and it's only like 3 degrees celsius outside. -.-
But the point of this thread, was not to start having a contest of who lives in the coldest country, but I was sure it would've ended up like that anyway knowing there's people like Aiwha around.
I know, as I wrote before that It's not the coldest ever at all, or it's 'Hot' related to you people in Alaska or wherever you are, but in Europe mate, in Italy, -24 is ****ing cold and Rare believe me, and people weren't ready or Used to such weather, as Akgeff was saying. People in Abruzzo, Molise, have no water and no electricty, and food is lacking too for example as the roads are blocked, snowed in completely.
Now, I don't care about the weather, I didn't complain at all, for me it was a MIRACLE to have it, I was overjoyed to have some snow after 15 years here! I even went running yesterday with -5, and while my mother keeps whining about having the heater on all day I'm in my room with the window open, I love the fresh air and you just deal with it. (But I came back in after running 3 minutes LOL) I really couldn't take that.
So the thread is about poor people that have lost their lives in these Uncommon-For-Europe circumstances, as Pa'li Makto correctly explained.

Personally, I have had enough of winter, I miss summer so much, I just want heat and not all these bloody clothes on.

Hahahaha you should come here then and see us deal with what we call "winter". I'm sure you'd just fall over laughing. More or less anything below 10C and we're all dressed up like the bubble boy :P

Yeah LOL! pretty much the same thing here :nsmile: Well that's how it is in Hotter countries I guess ^_^ me and my dad as english people a bit more used to lower temperatures, laugh at them, as soon as it's like 10 degrees, you see them pull out the snow coats like they're going hiking the K2 and furry coats and stuff XD

Ximphoron, may I ask where you are from? Your profile says Maryland (pronounced Marlin) Is that the Maryland in the U.S.? For some reason I always assume it wasn't, but now all of a sudden I'm not sure, but I thought the U.S. Maryland was pronounced Mehr-ill(like sick ill)-land?

Just wondering

The one in the USA. Natives either pronounce it Marlin (Mair-lin) or Merlin (Mehr-lin) in the north or Marilin (Mair-ah-lin), Marlin (Mair-lin), or Maryland (Mair-ah-lind) in the south. If you say "Mehr-ill-land" people assume you're from the DC area or out of state, but we don't mind that pronunciation. What really bugs people is if you say "Mehr-eee-land". That makes us cringe.
The Maryland accent tends to be rather lazy and slow, and often leaves out hard consonants. The southern MD accent sounds Virginia tidewatery, the northern sounds similar but with stronger vowels. Non-natives or people with out of state parents usually don't pick up the accent at all.
For example: "Government" becomes "Govamin", "St. Mary's County" becomes "S'marehs coun-ta", Baltimore is "Balmah".

But absolutely nobody here actually says "Mehr-ill-land". The closet you'll get to that natively is "Mair-ah-lind". If you say "Mehr-ill-land" folks will just assume you're out of state.

Sort of like Ohio is officially pronounced "Oh-hi-oh", but most people i've met from Ohio (southwestern area) say "Ah-hi-ah".

Right now I'm actually living in Pensyltucky, or rural PA. But i'm from Maryland, in the USA.

So theres your answer, with a bit of overexplanation.

Wow..I didn't even know this was going on, and I thought it was odd that 'winter' hasn't really gotten here yet. I mean Phoenix doesn't get real winters anyway but, it's been warm and I'm convinced winter isn't coming.
