View Full Version : Na'vi frogs :)
I came across these guys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrobates_azureus) some time ago - they're the bluest blue imaginable! In that Cinefex #120 Avatar article, one of the designers said, "The battle was coming up with a blue that would still look believable as flesh. There are blue-colored fish and birds, but no mammals with blue flesh that we could reference." I wonder if they looked at amphibians?
they look great, definitely poisonous though. anything that looks nice is always deadly :D

They're awesome! Those are the frogs I look-up to use as evidence when I see people arguing about if blue skin is even possible.

Thanks for posting. I have a lot of frogs living in my area and I think they are amazing to watch and listen to.

Awesome, beautiful blue :) Irayo Suzy nice thread :nsmile: I've seen those at an aquarium or something once, there are many types of those frogs, all different colors, amazing :O, blue, yellow, red, orange, they're very small, very coloured, and Lethal! very venomous ^_^ I remember from some documentary that some native tribes in the forests, 'dip' they're arrows by just literally Rubbing the arrows on the frog's skin, that type of frogs, no harm for the frogs, but their arrows are then incredibly lethal for a prey.

Oh I already know of these frogs. In fact I did an entire anthro series deticated to poison dart frogs, they're an inpsiration for some of my art.

Poison Dart frogs are very cool and becoming more popular.. The ones you see in captivity are not poisonous like the wild ones due to change in diet. They get their poison from eating ants and beetles that eat poisonous plants.

I wouldn't really care if she was angry at me, atleast i got to see her :inlove:
Also interesting is that, according to this page (http://www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/7I.html), the color comes from refracted light ("structural effects"), not a pigment (the Na'vi are colored by the cyanin pigment). Only plants that are blue get that color from a pigment (anthocyanin).

yeah i was surprised when the lecturer said that last semester in one of the lectures. i thought hmmm if i eat those insects would i become poisonoous too? :rotfl: i guess it really isn't a surprise though, alot of organisms have developed symbiotic relationships through that way (termites) even chloroplast is thought have have evolved that way :P
